I haven't even begun to tear apart the front to see where the problem is but here's what happened.......short version:

The last couple weeks I've noticed a strange noise and feel in the front end (right side I think) when I'm turning right and while downshifting from 3rd to 2nd......especially at the same time. So just now while on a gravel road I felt something "pop" and give loose and now there is a "pulsating" noise coming from what sounds like the same spot I thought from before. But the odd thing is the Jeep drives fine.....steers fine, accellerates fine, all gears operational, 4x4 works.......actually the noise dampens when in 4x4. It's not as loud when put the clutch in but it's still there. I jacked up the front and rear to turn the tires and all move freely.

 I'm stumped!!!!

I'm going to tear her apart this weekend but does anyone have any insight to what this may be and what to look for?!?

Sorry for the description but this is the best way I can describe it. I've wrenched cars for 25 years and this one has me stumped.
If you are looking for a cheap hobby that will get you out into the woods, collect rocks or bird watch........don't buy a Jeep.

Check your tires after a good run on the highway avoid sharp slow turns as you slow down and take a close look at the tires.  (see for signs of feathering or pulling).  If the noise was more prevalent when down shifting i am thinking it might be something steering or suspension related as thats when the whole system is loaded up with weight. check your ball joints and your steering joints.  you may have something coming loose or wearing out.

As you stated, if the whole power side of things is running well, i wouldn't be going into the cover right away.
