Winch Question
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:16:27 PM »
Hello everyone,
I just picked up a winch (Superwinch 8500) and am in the process of gathering all the accessories for it.
1) It has a hawse fairlead and has steel cable. Should I use a roller fairlead in front as well?
2)Can I use this as a snatch block? I'd remove the hook and have a clevis shackle connect there instead?
Thank you

Rollers are smoother for steel cable, hawse get chewed up and more friction on the steel cable.
The snatch block looks ok but the hook may not be big enough for a tree saver.
Get a tree saver too.

what he said, I have the superwinch lp10000 and that same snatch block, I pulled my self out of it from swampy mud and grass it was sucking me in, when I used the snatch block I was lifted with ease

Okay I'll get a roller for it. I was thinking of removing the hook than just mounting a clevis shackle to the pin that the hook is mounted to in the pictures. I picked up a tree saver 1/2 off for $10 at Princess Auto today. It's 4" x 6' and has a 15,000 lbs rating.

Thanks for the quick replies!

In answer to your original post, removing the hook would probably be a good bet... Otherwise if you do keep the hook, make sure when you are using it the open part faces up. That way if the hook spreads or breaks, it will hopefully fire downwards towards the ground.

I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

Hood open so if it snaps you get a dent not a shattered windshield?
Also do you winch from inside the vehicle or from the outside?

from inside the jeep, as I try to give it gas to help the winch from doing a dead lift on the jeep it self and to steer the jeep to where I want it to go also open hood so it don't go threw my head like buki said
