Would you hesitate to buy a TJ with 200,000 kms?
« on: June 04, 2006, 06:56:15 PM »
I'm helping my brother try to find a used TJ to buy. Anyways, I know that the 6cyl will go 400,000kms IF it is taken care of properly, but that is sometimes hard to tell when you examine a vehicle. Soooo.....Would you hesitate to buy a TJ with around 200,000kms on it or would you feel reasonably sure that the jeep had lots of life left. Thanks for your input.

Has it been wheeled? Wheel is way harder on an engine than regular driving. I bought my XJ with 185,00 on it. Put about 80,000km as an everday driver. After I began wheeling it it went downhill fast. So I replaced it with a used enigne(90,000kms) on rebuild. Have put maybe 5,000kms on it and now its got a knock, I put the XJ on a steep sidehill, didn't roll but left the engine running to power the winch to pull myself out. I think it may have run a bit dry.

Any on average I would expect to start seeing problems at 250,000kms on a 4.0 and by 280,000-300,000 it will need replacing. Less if wheeled.

I bought a grand cherokee with 290K on the 4.0L engine and have since added another 50K without any major problems and she still runs great.  Like you said, it all depends on how well it's been maintained and if it's been driven hard or not.

I wouldn't hesitate with the 4L...but defintely not the 4 banger. from all the 4cyl's I've seen with that many k's...they are on their last legs.

I sold my 91 XJ with over 320k on it and it ran like new...mind you, I maintained it very well. It was so clean you could eat off of it.

275k when we bought our xj, its just shy of 290 now.

So far I've had to cut out the cat and replace an upper rad hose. Other then that, it still runs like its new.

275K now on my '91 YJ 4.0L, still runs smooth and strong. I trust it to take me on 1500+km round trips regularly. Very reliable motors in these things.
