Anyone have any idea what the laws are regarding street legality and lifting a Jeep Cherokee?

I think it really depends on how big you are going to lift it. if you build a cop magnet, you are going to get hassle.

I've had many a cop behind me with no mudflaps, 4" lift, shortend bumper, inproper fender flares, no doors or mirrors and I haven't been pulled over. (knock on wood) But I don't drive like a jack@$$.
Cops pull you over for bad plates, stickers, or vin description not matching thier computer. I got pulled over once becuase their computer read my jeep was a '99red tj registered to a lady.

Well...llike Apex said...cops will pull you over for whatever they want. I've had 3 lifted XJ's and none of them had mud flaps, mind you, I had exteneded flares that mostly covered the tires.

I had cops behind me that never did a thing, and like Apex...I don't drive like and idiot...so they seem to leave me alone. Just depends on the cop I guess. For the record, I was running 8" of lift with 35's, 7" with 33's, and 5" with 33's.

You should be fine.

Depending on how crazy you wanna go, i believe that 44s are the largest street legal tire.

Fony actualy a 49" interco super swamper irok is the biggest DOT allowed tire you can run on the street

Well I doubt I'll even lift it 5" or more anyways, I'd just rather not end up with a fat ticket because I didn't do my research you know?

hey dude mbasicaly all the be concerned about if you only runnin like 5" lift is flares that cover the tire and possibly mudflaps

since your not going stupidly huge you dont realy have to wory about headlight/bumper height

There are lots of rules and regulations for SUVs and trucks and they are all on the provincial government website under the Highway Act. There is stuff about headlight height, mudflaps, mirrors, brake lights, etc. However, you ask most city police and they don't really know too much about these regulations. The ones you have to look out for are the highway police.

A couple years ago, there was a checkstop out at prairie creek and I know a couple guys that got mudflap tickets, but they are few and far between. Most Jeeps, as long as they look decent are ok, but if you are running 8" of lift and 31s, you might want to look out.

For the record, tires have to be completely covered by the body or fender flare, plus the they have to be covered down to the centerline of the axle.
