ok, I have an 83 cj with a 258 and I upgraded to a rebuilt motorcraft 2100 carb. I finished it off with a manual choke, an after market air cleaner and breathers on the valve cover thus eliminating the pcv system. I'm also left with a box of hoses, fittings, sensors and little vacuum gizmos which were also removed because they seemed redundant to me.  
 
now, my problem is that when it's running, it makes this loud sucking sound. it's so loud that you can't even hear the actual sound of the engine, otherwise it runs fine though. I checked everywhere for a vacuum leak and can't find any.  
 
don't tell me to put the carter BBD back on because it "accidentally" got crushed in a hydraulic press!

I would probably look at the gaskets for the adapter and the carb, just to double check. What adapter did you use to fit the carb to the intake? What size are the venturies on the carb?

pretty sure the gaskets are all on there. I forget the brand of adapter it was, and the venturies are 1.08" the sucking sound is coming from the carb intake. I'm also noticing oil mist coming out around the rear breather on my valve cover

Does it run ok other than the noise? How loud is the noise? Adaptors will sometimes make noise, I assume due to sharp edges, or just the additional length. Certain air cleaners will make a whooshing sound as well. I have used adaptors to put holley carbs on a few ford engines where i work, as well as using one on my own dodge 318. All of them seem to make a rushing air sound, especially the dodge. If the vacum leak theory doesn't check out, this could just be a characteristic of the setup.

that could be it because I don't see anything else that could create the problem. actually when I was installing it, the sharp edges and mismatched ports kind of bothered me. maybe someday I'll tear it apart again and get creative with a die grinder. thanks for the info!
