Best suggestions in fixing rusty floor areas?

My '94 has some rusty areas in the floor board. People have suggested two ways of fixing this: putting fiberglass over it or cutting it out and welding in new floor.

Looking for suggestions on which is the best way of going about this. If it is cutting out the floor, is there somewhere to buy new floorboards or should I simply use metal sheeting?  :shock:

Depends on how big the holes are and how many there are. On my '89 XJ I vould but my fist thru one so I cut out the whole driver's side floor and welded new sheet metal in.

If the holes are  small enough you could put a patch over them and either screw it on or rivet it with some sort of sealer.

I used POR15 to treat the rest of the floor and then went over all of it with Hippoliner(CT roll in box liner).

I agree with cLAY.  Cut the rust out and put new metal in.  Fiberglass will not hold up on a floor.  If you just want a quicker fix, cut it out, make templates out of beer box (cans) for patches.  Cut sheetmetal with some sheers to match the templates and rivot them to the floor.  Seam seal around the entire patch and boxline (gravel gaurd in a can even) it to seal it better and for cosmetics.

Do you think sheet metal would be better than patching with sections of floor boards from a wrecker and rivoting them in? If so, what kind of sheet metal would you suggest?

How big is the section your replacing???  If it is a fairly large size spot and you can get your hands on floor from a wrecked one, that would be the best I would recomend.  Normal sheet metel would work as well as long as its not a whole side or something you have to shape...!

Thanks 4Play. There are several areas near each other - so I think I will opt to try and get a floorboard from a wrecker and try welding it in.

Another option for welding is a 2 stage glue.  They have glue that meets and exceeds oem standards.  It is used factory on some box side.  Save ALOT of time compared to welding a larger spot.  Prep work grinding, the welding, grinding, etch priming all the bare metal, normal primer and then a sealing with a paint or boxliner...  just another idea   :wink:
