31" on a TJ

Hey guys,

I have an '02 TJ Apex edition... I desperately need new tires and I want to go bigger than what I have but can't really afford a lift to get 33"s on right now. So what I want to do is go with some 31x10.5R15 Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Radials for the interim and upgrade in the future.

2 Questions...

1) I have 235/75R15 right now (stock)... will 31x10.5R15 tires fit on my current wheel or will I need to buy new wheels as well?

2) Can I get away with 31's on my TJ without a lift?

Thanks in advance.

1.  You can get away with using 7" rims but 8" rims I find a little nicer for 10.5" tires

2.  Read the post at the top of the tech section

I Highly recommend going with the Mickey Thompson MTZ's instead of the claws and go with a 2" spacer lift. The Baja Claw's ride like crap and the MTZ's are better on and off road. They have the exact same sidewall design. Your 7" rims will be fine.

With the money you save on the tires you can buy the spacers. If you need help putting them in, let me know.

Thanks Dan,

That is exactly the information I was looking for.

Thanks for the link Swamp, I checked it out when someone else recommended it. I did do some research on the Tire size before but wanted opinions from other members to get their input.
My main question that needed answering was about the wheels.

Thanks again to those of you who took time to help me out with your answers, they were very useful in the decision making. :D

I went to Elrich Tire in Town (Lethbridge) yesterday in search of Mickey Thompsons... 3 Week wait and with the tires I had combined with the snow lately I thought it be best to go with something else.

I ended up with Cooper Discoverer STT 31x10.5R15's.

They handle great and I love the look of them.

Here's some pic's, sorry for the quality but I took them with my phone...
