Rad Problems
« on: February 01, 2007, 06:02:37 PM »
i have  had nothing but bad luck when it comes rads in my 98 ZJ

i decided to look at my rad due to the cold weather and the friggen thing is leaking again.

... so tomorrow afternoon i will go do to CityWide Radiator and get this damn mess straightened out.  this will be the third rad to be put in, last time it started to leak( cold weather again) they pressure tested and turned out the water pump was leaking so their response  change the water pump and we will pressure test it again and if the rad is bad we will replace it :?

the darn things  keep leaking where the plastic tank joins the aluminum rad.  i think time to start looking for a full aluminum rad.

Anyone know of an aftermarket full aluminum rad for a 1998 Grand Cherokee???

try All Season Radiator... they do custom rads...

The stock rads has plastic ends. The plastic and the aluminum contracs at different temperatures. Basically the seams do not move together ... and it leaks. Mine only leaks in the winter.

I hope you understand what I mean..

Is it a v8? If so, it's very common...keep an eye on i, buy you will be fine.

I had a weird issue with rad fluid in my 95 ZJ...it never leaked or left a drop on the ground, but I was constantly topping it up.

it is a 4.0... just seems whenever we get a cold snap... the dam thing starts to weep around the seems at the bottom of the tank... i am thinking that i will have them take the plastic tanks off and get some aluminum ones welded on and call it good. i think they would probably give me a good deal on it due the amount of warranty work that they have done on it the inital install....this is the second one.  see you at breaky 'smurf

Mine has been leaking since last year. It does not leak much and only when there are cold snaps. I had mine presure tested and it's fine. It's the original rad I have on it.

That's why you should not wheel alone (i do it some time...it's still not safe) & I recommend AAA Plus (ask Blair why   ) ifanything happens ...it will save you LOTS of cash

glad to see you're coming

My old TJ rad did the same thing.

Yes Dom, you are right and I now have a membership. A tow bill from out of town could cost $400+ even after you get it to the trail head. I now have a membership.

Thanks again Dom

either that or have connections  .... my sis in law works for citywide and 3years ago  my 03 dodge qc 4x4  lost all of it gauges and everything...still ran but i was running "blind"  i wasn't sure what was happening to the engine. Dodge roadside assit. towed me back to Rocky Mtn House and but i wife wasn't happy with that and talked to the sis in law and later that evening a deck truck( out of calgary, that had a load out to red deer ) showed up... brought me back to calgary right to the dealership .... for $150 cash 8) ....normally a deck trip that distance would be around 600-800    i was only a standard ama member at the time so they could even come close to this price.  needless to say i upgraded my membership.
if you are wondering why i lost all gauges and such...... the connector between the dash and the computer was corroded :?

Same here with the plastic / aluminum Rad , thermal expansion BS. Last month , I replaced the radiator in my recently aquired Comanche , using the above mentioned part , the old rad was all metal construction.

It leaks , ............ um ............. some times , you can smell it when standing in front of the vehicle occassionally.

New water pump , hoses , thermostat and fan clutch went in at the same time.

What am I gonna do about it ? ....... pretty much nothing but wait till the warm weather , for now , pffffffffff

Check the rad cap, beacuse its a plastic rad it should have a "low" rating cap, ie it vents at lower pressure than a metal rad.

2 years ago I was on the trail with a '93 ZJ that had a brand new rad in it, installed at the dealer. Blew a seam and puked everything on the trail. Turns out somewhere along the line someone put a 15psi cap on which allowed too much pressure to build up causing it to rupture. The tech at the dealership re-used the old cap on the new rad so it happened again. They caught it the second time and warrentied it.

If you are popping the tanks on your rads, I'd replace the cap and make sure its the correct vent rating(maybe get it direct from the dealer). Even if your cap is the correct rating I'd replace it anyway.

when i got my new rad cap it listed a few but mine said 17 or 18 psi.. i'd really have to check the box to remember, i know it was the lower of the ones it listed.  special ordered it with a valve on the top to release pressure if i needed to.  i know the top of my rad is all metal, haven't looked at the rest though, need a stepladder heh.
