242 or 249?
« on: September 05, 2007, 08:25:40 PM »
Hey jeepers,
long time reader - first time poster! So, to no surprise the viscous coupler is done in my...you guessed it....93 ZJ, so i just nagged the front driveshaft off...quick fix, but i'd like to have 4wd for the snow!
I know the 242 is the way to go, and i if im willing to change t-cases, i might as well go with the 242, but ive read that its a little bit of fab work. I can manage the spline situation, but a sloppy shifter...can it be that bad? Has anyone done this swap flawlessly? I'd love to have the 242, I've got one in my YJ and cant say anything bad about them. Plus, I think that if i did get a donor 249, it would only last 50k or less...

I have a 249 transfer case that I tried to sell and gave up.  I just put it in my metal bin about 2 days ago.  Nothing wrong with it as far as I know.  If you want it it is yours.  As for the input splines it is out of a 93 ZJ 4.0L.  Even if the splines are different you could just rob the VC out of mine and put it in yours.  Let me know and I will take it out of the bin before the recycling guys come.

Sure Adrc, how many km's are on the case? Splines should be the same. Mine is the 4.0 also.
