pulled away froma stop sign today and somthing let go in the rear diff ....could get it to go faor a few blocks ,felt like a auto trans does when it slips,,,then nothin,,just a whiring grinding noise,,had to use 4wd to get home

what did i break? diff or an axle? any help would be great

most likely ring or pinion i figure,,,,,just had it in for axle seals ,,wonder if that had anything to do with it

If you have an AMC 20 the splines may have stripped in your two piece axle.

I never had one strip but I would guess you could put it in gear and look at the nut. If its spinning you know its stripped. You could weld the hub to the axle or just replace the side axle/hub.

You could always put the rear up on jack stands put it in gear and give it some gas and see what spins

Think I have a spare AMC 20 kickin around here, moser 1 piece axles, 3:54 gears, if you need it....

couldnt get the inspetion cover off to look inside ,,so i still dont know what is broke yet ,

frenchy as soon as i can figure out what gears i have i may take you up on that diff

Doesn't the amc 20 use the 2 piece axle? He probably just sheared the key way at the end of the shaft. The nut on the shaft will hold the wheel on. Simple fix if he hasn't damaged the shaft to bad.

im not familiar with amc diffs at all,,, other jeeps always had danas,,,an explenation or better yet pics of what i need to do to fix this if it is a pin thats sheered off

do i need to pull the axle or can i get at it from the cover

im not a jeep noob ,but shure feel like one when it comes to diffs

I'd jack it up and turn driveshaft and wheels, see what's turning and what isn't. Or get a helper, test and see where the noise is coming from...

If the rear shaft has spun the keyway, you can remove the axle by removing the 4 bolts that surround the bearing going through the backing plate and into the diff housing. The difficult part is to find out which shaft has spun. If you remove the bearing caps and step on the brake, let out the clutch in first gear, and have someone watch the large nut, to see which one spins. Make sure the jeep is blocked and do it in two wheel drive. Once you have determined which one is toast then remove that axle and you will probably have to replace it. You may get lucky and be able to salvage it, if you can just clean it up and replace the sheared keyway.

turns out the axle is ok but the splines are toast ,,just going to welder up and be done wth it
