Hey all,

I remember seeing a similar post on the old site, but cant find it anymore...

Anyway, was driving to work today and a dump truck coming the opposite direction either kicked up or spit out a large rock.... smacked dead on into the windshield, and left an impact crater the size of a soccer ball!!  If it was going any faster it would surely have come right through and seriously hurt my passenger. :(

Since I just got back from vacation and money is tight, and insurance does not cover this... the questions are as follows:

1) Can you get reasonable windshield insurance to cover this event in the future?  I know other provinces have it but not sure about Alberta.

2) How long can I let it go before it will start to get worse?

3) What is the law about this stuff... do I have to fix it right away.  I know in Quebec you do, but I am always seeing cars here with big cracks, etc.

4) Where is a cheap place I can get this fixed?

If any of the cracks go into the drivers field of view you can get a ticket for that. If the bulk of it is in the centre and only a few lines go over to your side, grab some windshield glue from canadian tire. Run it along the crack, alow it to wick in, then wipe off. Since it's clear, it'll erase most of the crack. Won't do anything for the actual impact site though. You should get it fixed ASAP as if the same thing happened again, that window would be useless. I think it'll cost you in the ballpark of 130-150 to get replaced. You can get insurance for that in Alberta, but I never looked into it. Alberta allows cracks in your windshield since they do use sand on the roads, it's places that don't, that have strict windshield laws.

My windshield has been cracked like crazy for awhile. Many many crackes that spread and craters. I have had it for a year now like that. I think the main key is to drive within the law and you wont get pulled over, because the windshield ticket will just be added on to any other tickets you might get.

I got a bud that works at Bucks Junkyard that told me he can get me a windshield for free. But they seem to be closing down shop. As they make more money crushing the cars then junk-yarding them. He told me alot of the cars are coming from the states.

I know with many high-end vehicles where the windshield costs alot of money, some people get seperate windshield coverage, so that it wont affect the primary ins coverage. But Jeep w/s are cheap, $200 from Apple Auto Glass type place. Just hit up Jeep Stuff they might have your windshield there.

Last time that happened to me I chased down the truck that threw the rock and made him pay for it.

If you have a "crater" in your windsheild I would get it fixed ASAP, they will ticket you for it, if you are lucky you'll get a warning first.

Thanks for the suggestions... any ideas where to get this replaced for cheap?

I got a price of $159 plus GST from Auto glass depot ph.230-5298 this price is for original chrysler product, not the cheap import. they will pick up your jeep and leave you a car.

I use these guys as I usually end up going through 2 - 3 windshields a year (Deerfoot sucks). $50 deductible on replacement for $134.22 a year. Your insurance company can get it for you.

:shock:  Woah, thats a nice one!

Yeah, only use the glue thing on a windshield that you can save.... small chips etc. If you get on it ASAP you erase all the lines, and prevent ice from getting in there making it worse.

Went to Moore's Auto Glass... $125 for an 03 TJ... $133 installed and including tax!!!!  Cheapest I've seen it, and it looks amazing....

It actually seemed like there was no glass at all... has not been that clean since I bought the Jeep and drove it new off the lot....
