Engine swaps can be expensive, trust me :-[

If your going to do it, swap something in that is very common V6 chevy or something like that. The trip your planning sounds like you may be going to some remote places, you don't want to be sitting for a week while JOE'S garage is waiting for an exotic part.
Save the money rebuild and upgrade the existing drive train  Just my opinion

I was looking into the 80s because the purchase price of the truck would be low.  2000 and up is going to be more then I was wanting to spend.  I was thinking start with a truck that is in good shape but old so I can get it for cheap.  Then as time goes on add more parts and modifications.  I had a 91 XJ with 4.0 and an aw4.  It was a great jeep.  Just hard on gas.  I hate to say it but what I am looking for might be from Japan. 

Would the 4banger XJs be that bad if you had taller axle gears and a manual trany?  I don't really care about gobs of power.  As long as it can turn the tires and get decent milage in overdrive thats all I would care about.  I could probably get one cheep to, no?
