I have a Dana 44 from a XJ with a towing package upgrade. I wanted to put 4.56 gears in and I'm  not sure what the cut off is for the gears before I need to change the carrier. Anyone have any idea?

3:55 is what you will have in you're diff. That is the cutoff, so you will need a new carrier.

Thick gear are available for d44's so you can avoid carrier change.
