brand new drive shaft bunk?
« on: April 28, 2008, 08:40:31 PM »
I just installed a RE 4.5" superflex kit on my 02 TJ (along with an AA SYE and DSI CV drive shaft).

All in all I've driven it about 40 km since the install to alignment.

My problem is it starts to shake around 45kph and is more violent the more throttle I give it.  Had the alignment done and they also looked at the pinion angles, rear is not quiet 2 degrees low and front is about 1.  I had the rear pinion angle the same as the drive shaft but it still shook, but only under throttle.

Took the rear drive shaft off and drove it around, there were no shakes or shimmies to speak of.

The lower u-joint in the CV part of the shaft also looks off.  The dust boot is cracked and has worked its way towards the centre of the cross shaft and the bearing race looks like it is also coming out of the bearing cup.

Has any one else had similar problems or have any insight on what might cause it?

Sounds like the driveshaft is out of balance.  I would take it back to DSI and have them take a look at it

Got to looking closer at the problem.

The drive shaft is fine.  Pinion angles are fine, rear uppers are the same length and the lowers are fixed, but the drive shaft points towards the passenger side of the transfer case.  I'm guessing the brackets were not welded in the right place, they don't look bent. Either that or the drive train is somehow off centre, can't see that though as how could it shift?
