should i buy it??
« on: March 16, 2009, 05:37:36 PM »
hey everyone. been here AB now for 6 months and i finally may have a chance to buy a jeep!!  whooo, so anyway im looking at a 2000 jeep tj with a 3" suspension lift and 35's, hard and soft top, 97 xxx. 4.0 ltr with a 5 spd. its in great shape and runs good. lots of go and stops quick and straight. i can get it for 13 g's and so i want to know  if anyone  would think this a good deal. also, can anyone point me in the direction of a good shop that could inspect the jeep for me. the dealer has an inspection record and its fine but id rather trust a 4x4 guru.  thanks,  cheers

The lift and tires are worth nothing in buying this jeep. Beacause it ran 35's, you may have some issues very soon with:

Hub and bearing assembly x2
tie rod
track bar
inner axle ujoints
axleshafts x4

Now compare the jeep to a STOCK jeep in the same condition. 13 is VERY high!!!!

38 TJ's that fall within 2000-2005 years and are less than 13000 to buy.

2002 TJ 4L with 85,000 kms for $8000 mis one example.

`48 CJ2A, `54 CJ3B, `97 TJ, and 03 WJ...batting close to .500 when it comes to jeep models owned vs. jeep models created.....

I'd be leary, I tried to buy a used D44 from a wrecker (was running 35's)  the spider gears were all chipped and the clutch pack was broken.  Mind you this is my luck.  They took it back with no fuss because they had guaranteed it was all ok.

I'd pick one that's not been modified so you can build it as your own and be picky with the options you want it to have.
This is not 'Nam, this is wheeling.  There are rules.

its always better to buy stock then upgrade yourself. that way you know whats goin on with the jeep. dont grab the first one you see cause its lifted and looks cool. id look for a solid low mileage TJ with a 4.0L and 5 speed, and with dana 44 rear end. should be able to find this in your price range. the rubicons are nice too. if you can find one in stock form thats never been off road then id go for that, but it will cost more.
if you really need one inspected, pm me your info as i work in a dealership and ive spent a lot of time with jeeps.
happy shopping:)

I picked up 2000 tj in good shape in edmonton for $5000 about 2 months ago.  Keep looking and post what you find here in case someone knows and can vouch for the owner of a modified jeep.
