1996 Grand Cherokee LTD ?
« on: January 22, 2009, 05:34:42 PM »
My kid just just picked this unit up today.
It's got a 5.2, auto and it looks like it's full time 4WD.
Is this so or is there a way to put it in 2WD?
There is no 2WD selection on the transfercase

You have the NP249 case. It is all wheel drive all of the time. Only way to get into 2wd is too swap in a different t-case.

Yes..
Still haven't done this myself but it's one of my to do's...
Most have found this to be a fairly simple task to perform..even for the Saturday mechanic.
From what I have read, you may not need to swap out the input shafts if you can find a tc of the same year for your jeep or a 97 & up should work also.
You can also get away without changing the shift gate that sits under the shifter bezel, grab the bezel for your swap tho.
VIC Instructions: located behind the info center, unplug the two wire red clips. Unbundle the tape that is wrapped around the cluster of wires and find two single wire black plugs (one male clip one female) and plug them together! This will prevent the VIC from beeping while displaying, "service 4WD" switch.
hth!
