Is a Dana 35 strong enough to run 33's off road? Using a locker and low gears of course.

I run 33" SSRs which are a VERY heavy tire with an ARB and 4.10s and I have no problems, BUT I am not a heavy foot plus I have a 4 banger. I also know a guy with an ARB, 4.56, 35" MTRs and a 4.0L and he has not broken an axle.

However, I know a few guys that have broken axles with 33" SSRs, 4.88 and a true trac.

The big thing with the D35 is how much power you give her. If you are not a very heavy foot a locker, 33s and low gears should not be a problem. If you have a heavy foot, then probably no locker and 33s MAX.

I run 33X12.50's on my Dana 35 with 307's, no locker. No problems to speak of, but a heavy foot could pose potential for problems.

I second that. Same setup on my rig. I would like to re-gear but the $$ is inhibitive. I am conscious of my throttle and wheel hop. I haven't had a problem... yet. The ford 8.8 is a cost effective upgrade, plus stronger than the D44. been thinking about the upgrade. here's the question, do I put money into the D35 with a locker and gears OR save the $ for an 8.8 and put my mind at ease.

Plus you guys are only running 3.07, the lower the gear ratio the more torque to the wheels.

As for upgrading the D35, I did because I needed more when I had my 31s, and even with 33s I am still very happy I put an ARB in. As for regearing, just keep you eyes open for someone getting rid of a set of 3.73 or 4.10s, you usually can get them pretty cheap

I have A D35 with 33's ,4.56's,and lockrite,4banger Wheeled it lots this past summer with no problems. Also, I have a set of 3.73's if anyone is interested.

debate on installing used gears. I have had people say it is no problem so long as they are set up right. I have had people say never install used, always buy new. thoughts?

I would say if you can do it yourself , go for it. If you are paying someone, then it would be smart to go new. My used gears show no sign of use. They are in great shape.

The important thing about used gears is that they can be noisy if they arent re installed with the same teeth matching up to eachother, and the measurement specs as they were run at previously.

They get worn together in their original setup. So if they dont go back in similar to how they came out, they can howl.

I've never done a used set. All this is info from freinds that are long time professional mechanics.

I'm runnin' 35's with 4.56's, and a H.O. 035 with TBI. I also have EZ lockers front and rear. Now with that said..... I have not yet broken an axle on the trail( in Canada). However, the rocks are a totally differant story. Part of it could be due to the 700R4 auto(3.52/4 1st gear?). I broke 4 axles, 3 stub shafts, and 3 u-joints in Moab this year! One af the axles was the inner pass. side (2 piece still). One of them was also the rear, as well as twisting the splines on two other rears. :shock: AND... 3 fronts at the Off-road expo!

no probs on 35" mickey thompsons

But i did have a 4 cyl last year :?
We'll see how long it lasts with the new engine..............
