The impact of industrial activity on Calgary's water supply and on recreation and wildlife in Kananaskis is unsustainable. The value of the land and what it represents to people should convince the government of Alberta to put a higher priority on protecting Kananaskis. Under current policy, the primary use of Kananaskis is logging.
Spray Lakes Sawmills has management authority over the forest of the foothills from Sundre to the southern border of Kananaskis. They plan to clear-cut 66% of the area. Most of the rest is inaccessible mountain slopes or curtains of trees along pathways or around campgrounds and trailheads. They are accepting input on their Forest Management Plan until June 23 when it goes Alberta Sustainable Resource Development for final approval. If they continue to clear-cut vast tracts of Kananaskis, they will have a severe impact on recreational activities and the businesses that rely on the appeal of the wilderness to attract visitors.
The multi-use policy regulating access to Kananaskis is not working. Kananaskis Country needs to be protected. Access should be the sole responsibility of Community Development, Parks and Protected Areas.
