Tranny shot?
« on: March 10, 2010, 02:24:07 PM »
Hey Guys question for ya

I got a 91 Yj with a 4.0L and a AX15.  The transmission has been acting really funny lately.  When I shift into 2nd gear the tranny gets stuck there.  It happens the odd time but is really annoying.  It is like there is something blocking it from coming out of gear.  I have to drive around in 2nd until it releases.  When It releases it is like nothing happend.  I have gotten the tranny flushed last year around aug.

So my question is...........is there anything I can do to the tranny to fix it or should I get it rebuilt or what.  I have never done any tranny work other than removing it to put a new engine in but that is pretty much the extent of it.

Open to all answers and good transmissions shops to take it as I am a student and cannot afford an arm and a leg.

Cheers
Dave

Isnt 91 still a peugot, or were they already phased out?

If its a peugot, junk it.

It it really is an AX, then its worth looking at fixing.

believe it is the AX15 as I thought the peugot had a two piece set up hooking to the transfercase and mine does not

Possible I guess. I've only worked on 1 peugot, and it was from the top. We shoved a roll of electrical tape into the shift tower to get 1st and reverse back up and running......................

'91 should be an AX15.

Do you have anything weird with the clutch? Noises, spongy pedal etc? I'm wondering if maybe the clutch is hanging up and not releasing. Try slipping it out of gear without the clutch a few times by accelerating a bit then just as you let off the gas push the shifter out of gear. Now that you know you can do it try it next time it sticks in 2nd, if it doesn't slip out then its the tranny, if it does its a clutch problem.

If it seems like a good idea at the time it probably isn't!
