more towing torture

Sure, there's strong opinions on here, but good technical ones too.

I'd like to hear opinions on setting up to tow a jeep behind a trailer, behind a 2003 CTD.

hey dunl,

i looked into this awhile back,  if memory is correct and to my surprise i came to conclusion it was legal, though the combination i was trying to research was towing a jeep that had a trailer attached ...

trailers dont have a tow rating under class 5 operators i know of - i think towing a heavier thing behind the trailer in an emergency stop situation would cause a jackknife where you get stopped and the jeep in tow passes both you and the trailer ...

i have never seen such a convoy on the highway in all my years driving
'89 yj - bought new - almost got my moneys worth
'97 xj - family cruiser now

I have seen it and believe its only allowed behind a trailer using a 5th wheel pin type hitch.  You would be subject to the same regs as towing doubles, total max allowed length including tow rig, if over 3500# needs its own brakes, etc.

Of course it would be subject to all the same drawbacks as regular flat towing except tenfold since you cann't see it back there at all.

The wildest thing I ever saw was coming out of Moab Utah. A Dodge 3500 dually pulling a large 5th wheel(28ft?) which then was towing a 14ft car trailer with a built up TJ on it. Right after him was the same combo but different color truck,TJ,trailer but the same exact setup. Pretty sure that wouldn't be allowed here as you would be over the max length.

To clarify: towing a jeep (flat tow?) or is Jeep on a trailer and a trailer behind it.

as mentioned in above post, first trailer must be fifth wheel and then a trailer behind to max overal lenght of 20m and of the prop GVW on tow vehicle.

There goes that idea.  >:(

Yes, its definately only behind a trailer with a 5th wheel hitch. And total length from bumper of truck to end of 2nd trailer  can not be longer then 20m. I have a 26' 5th wheel and a 14' flat deck car trailer and was making inquiries. Its quite the ordeel to set up. You have to conteract the tungue weight applyed to the back of the 5th wheel by ballasting the front with additional weight so the 5th wheel still pulls correctly, and of course have proper wiring, brakes etc going to second trailer. Not sure what kind of set up you would need to just tow the jeep behind the 5th wheel without a trailer,,,maybe use a dolly so it has brakes, not sure. The guy I was talking to at a hitch store  said you could throw a $1000 bucks at it trying to set it up and it still might not work out. So far I've stuck with the two trip method going out west,,,which sucks.

something I have thought about as well. Problem is my second trailer and Jeep would be a total of 7000 lbs and a hitch weight of 500 lbs. In order for a fifth wheel to tow properly ( they are spec'd for 15% to hitch). I would easily add 700lbs with hitch to back of fifth wheel (total fifth wheel is 5400lbs), and sway bars would be required as well. (trailer and jeep would be heavier than fifth wheel and Jeep cannot be flat towed or use dolly. This is pretty scary when you consider the fifth wheel pulls different when water tank is full compared to empty.  In short for the two or three times a year I would do this i will have the wife pull one of the trailers and i will the other and be safe.
