Had an Amc Eagle with a 258 split a muffler wide open after a backfire. Turned out to be bad plug wires.... got a shock off one.

clay i could swap over my wires from the YJ as i just put new wires on it...... (old ones probably good. that jeep RAN) the plugs are fine though;  i can do cap and rotor too while i'm at it...... they look good but who knows...... time to start ruling things out!

Aaron, i have some control arms here :)  tradesies?

tonight wil consist of compression and timing tests.  that should at least point me in some direction....  and i'll swap coils and MAPs, as i have a spares.   this just sucks because theres no codes...........

I use water or winded and a spray bottle, spray them quickly to see if they shirt out, cheap simple test.

You should be able to use them but the coil wire might be different. I would be good to try a different coil wire as well. I've seen a bad CPS can cause backfiring as well as a cracked spark plug body, hard to spot that one.

problem solved  ;D ;D ;D ;D

bad coil.   go figure. wonder if it runs the injectors too........ must have stopped running the plugs and just fired the injectors; which flooded the muffler and cylinders....... and caused the caboom. i donno, but its running now :)  so you can have 'spark' and have a bad coil

but ya, new coil and she's running good;  even got the muffler warrantied;  :o

huzzah!

thanks for all the help and ideas everyone; greatly appreciated.

Glad you got it figured out, but the coil doesn't run the injectors - indeed, the fact that the plugs weren't being fired and the injectors were working proves that! The injectors run off the ECU directly as they don't need much in the way of current.
