Hi guys,
On Wednesday, my 1998 Jeep XJ stalled on me on Deerfoot and wouldn't start again, I had it towed to my mechanic who got it started again but by then it had developed some pretty bad rod knock (also very rough idle).
I decided at that point to just cut my losses and sell the Jeep but as unpredictable as this world is, my girlfriend was in a parking lot collision yesterday in her 1994 XJ. Looks like after the collision, she's going to need a new front bumper, hood is a bit damaged, new rad, new headlight assembly.
I did some reading last night and it seems as though it should be possible to swap her engine from her 94 XJ into my 98 XJ without too many problems. My mechanic didn't seem too sure that he could do it but searching various forums (naxja/cherokeeforum), I see lots of people saying that they were able to get a DIY swap done within a day or 2 so I'm hoping a certified mechanic can get it done sooner. Our Jeeps are both automatics, both have NP242 transfercases I believe? Sorry, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to these Jeeps.
He's going to let me know tomorrow if he thinks he's up for it but in the meantime, does anyone have any recommendations for a mechanic in Calgary who could be up for this swap? Also, any estimates on pricing? My mechanic estimated around $750-1000 which sounds fair for a 12-13 hour job at $75/hr, but I just wanted to get an idea from a group of people who have experience with these swaps.
Thanks for your time, please let me know if you need any more info and I'll do my best to answer.
