Pretty impressive to walk away from.

Nothing impressive about it - walking away from it was nothing more than dumb luck.

Leaving an acetylene bottle in your vehicle, and noticing the odour when it leak....then starting the vehicle to move it to air it out...."impressive" is not the word that I would choose for the sequence of events.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Wow.. First thing I'd do is one not leave an acetylene bottle in an enclosed space overnight.. Two it would be upright with the cover over the valve.. What are some people thinking? (Or are they just not thinking?)

Years before.
Alright my grade 3 students. This is how a lighter works. Gas plus spark makes FIRE.

Stupid luck got in Darwin's way on his way to the gene pool cleansing.

And why are you storing an  acetylene bottle in a FJ? ???

This is not a Darwin award.  He is alive.

Many of us carry acetylene bottles in our vehicles, including myself.  But like all pressurized cylinders, it must be stored upright.  This is especially important for acetylene as it has acetone mixed in to keep the acetylene stable as it likes to go "f this fj" at pressures above 15psig.  (see above photo).

What makes me mad about things like this?  Did this guy have any sort of warning placard on his vehicle letting others know there was both flammable and compressed gas cylinders within the vehicle?  Had this have been a car accident, how would anybody know there was a potential bomb in the back?  Obviously no way to tell now, but I highly doubt it.

Storing a pressurized gas cylinder in your vehicle isn't the smartest thing in the world....but isn't the dumbest either.

Once you realize that there is acetylene mixed with the air in your vehicle, rolling down you power windows is definitely getting into "seriously dumb" territory. Leave the door open, open the garage door, and GO AWAY to let that thing air out. Doing anything else at that point in time is very, very stupid.
