Proper Fitting Tire Chains

I certainly appreciated the member  (Brian) who brought chains last year and kindly pulled several of us with lockers , 35s  and winches on more than one occasion.

I remember that.... fun times.
Tom, he did hit it with lots of skinny pedal, and with speed. The grade and the elements were against us that day. I can't remember if Bryan was running his chains that day, or not. We sure put his winch through a workout, though!

I guess it depends on how you wheel. Typically if I need to put chains on the break trail I take that as a good sign that maybe its time to turn back and try a different trail.

Usually when I pull out the chains is when I've broken something and am reduced to 2wd. Or I have to tow out a dead vehicle and there are lots of hills.

You really want to have 2 or 3 cams.  It just makes life so much easier.  If you shorten them right up, you will have a hell of a time putting them on in less than perfect conditions.  Without cams you will need to use bungies, but then you will always be losing bungies on the trail.

Anyway, I don't understand the hate for chains.  When it is icey, life is so much easier and safer.  They are quick and easy put on, should be less than 2 minutes and don't slow you down off road.  They cost less than the price of a tire for a pair.

we've had a lot of fun with chains and without chains.  they even saved our bacon a few times.

I'm quite sure chains have been around a lot longer than recreational off road driving...

Back when waiporous was open you chose a trail that was right for the group. And some years there was so much snow you had to run chains just to do the waiporous valley road. Browns hill , first hill west of four corners was impassable with all the snow even with chains.
Now there is a limited selection of open winter trails so you choose the trail before you even get there. Most open winter trails all have steep hills and yes it is a safty factor if the run leader says who runs the jewellery.
And yes I have slide backwords down steep hills and sometimes not in the ruts. What a rush. Not for the newbie.

Never say never Tom chains have there place, although never needing them on any trails in AB or BC but I have used them in northern SK and MB to get through when your up against bumper height snow and nowhere to winch to
