I had to use a short arm of the 231. About 3/4 of an inch shorter to make mine work.

The other thing I'm working on is that the plug on the 242 for the shift indicator wiring is different than what the 249(4pin) had.  If I swap the one from the 249 in to the 242 will it work properly?  Guess I could try, eh?

Where is the position of the shift sensor on the 242? Earlier 242s had the sensor on the rear side of the Tcase (later ones have it on the front side of the case) and used a 2-wire sensor, to my knowledge there's no way to adapt them to work with the new sensor or plug. I ran into the same problem with my 242 that came from an '89 XJ.

I had a lot of linkage problems with my 242 swap. So bad in fact I stripped out the internal synchros, twice. Second time was so bad I couldn't fix it so I swapped in a 231 I had kicking around. My case was the old style as well with the sensor on the back. I wonder if those are harder to set up the linkage on than a newer one.
