TJ Sub-woofer Replacement?
« on: February 20, 2012, 06:13:24 PM »
I blew the stock woofer in my TJ, any good place to find a replacement? To those who may not know a 6.5" shallow mount 2-ohm sub is not the easiest speaker to come across. Or better yet.....any easy-ish worthwhile upgrades? I have little experience with car stereos, but any suggestions that would point me in the right direction would be good.

2 words tang band. You tube those. Ridiculous amounts of bass from those little cones. Only if you want something that will go in the stock location.  It would be an upgrade.

Googled tang band, and they don't make a 2 ohm speaker.

Yeah the eBay one was my top choice, I was just wondering if any other Wrangler owners got creative and found something local that works. Quadratec also has direct OEM replacement, but..meh

Hmmmm....I just pulled the trigger on the ebay one......oh well,

I'd think they'd sound about the same too, its not like the enclosure in the Jeep is any good.

Did you go with the Kicker one? If so, I'd like to know how the install/fit goes, as well as the sound. Tia

Well the install was actually pretty easy, the wiring was very easy and it sounds better than stock, Its not amazing but a definite improvement.

Hardest part was clearing out the housing to make room for the larger speaker. I took some tin snips and went to town, the plastic would just shatter when cut....sooo it was kind of fun.

Wiring involved attaching the brown wire to the negative terminal on the speaker and attaching the grey to the positive. I had to cut off the little clips on the wires, strip them and then attach them to the speaker. Speaker had these neat little clips so it was a breeze to hook it up. There were two wires (black, red) which I tried attaching..didn't work, left them unattached.

OEM Speaker still wired in

Kicker wired in

Drilled out some new holes for the original screws and after a few test fits it sat flush. Screwed back in, re-installed the center console and boom...new woofer.

Thanks for the write up.  I was thinking of going this route myself, but I may end up doing a custom enclosure with a JL 8" of some sort, a 8W7 would be nice to fit in!
