odd issue with dash lights on tcase swap
« on: March 02, 2012, 05:09:10 PM »
Have an interesting problem that I am trying to figure out. Here's the scoop:

I have a '98 XJ that came with a 242 transfer case. The lights on the dash worked correctly (ie green for full-time 4wd and yellow for part-time).

I'm now swapping in a different transfer case I have, which came from a '96 XJ (reason for the swap, SYE of course!)
It is also a 242.

However, now when I put it in part-time 4wd, I get the green light on the dash. When I put it in full-time 4wd, I get no light at all!

I did notice the 4-pin sensor location differed from one tcase to another. On the '98, the sensor plug is at the front of the tcase (transmission side, close to the breather vent). On the '96 tcase, the sensor is on the rear side, above the fill plug, close to the red/silver stamped label.

I am using the original sensor from the '98 tcase, bolted into the '96 one.

Am I SOL here?

Cross reference the part number for a sensor for the 96 and a 98 and see if it even uses the same sensor. I'm guessing of the location changed so did the method of how the sensor picks up which position the tcase is in.
