CB mount to?
« on: March 04, 2012, 03:31:57 AM »
So I want to mount my cb antena to the body of my xj but I don't know if it would bend the body at all. I am looking at mounting it between the gas cap door and the rear tail lights. I took a look at it today and relized that the meatel if the body might be a little to thin. I was thinking I might have to put a little board behind maybe to stragthing it up?

Any other ideas would be great

Never had any problems myself. Had a CB antenna mounted to front passenger side quarter panel with no issues, driver's side quarter panel with no issues, and know of others mounted to rear quarter panels either side (as you suggested) with no issues. Just do it up.

I've seen trees and rocks tear the CB antenna from this location. Ugly body damage afterwards so this wouldn't be my first pick. I've mounted my antenna on several locations on my XJ, but in the end settled for a magnetic mount on the roof .

The roof is the best place on an XJ.... I had a magnetic antenna before but it used to fall off all the time. I drilled a hole in the roof and instailed a wide base for the antenna. It works like a darn! I added a spring between the base and my flex fibreglass antenna. It help with the low hanging branches. ::)

I'm a little tired of hearing folks in the US though... and sometime I hear spanish (probably from the US or Bownest).

I wouldn't mount it on the sides either. All my ZJ/XJs have them in the roof. I gutted the sunglasses compartment in the overhead console and then drilled right over it so the connector/mount comes in thru there. Cable is run forward to above the windshield, across to the A pillar, under the pillar trim down to the dash then under the dash to the radio. Not hard at all. Need a good solid antenna mount, a large washer for support under roof and a spring. I found a weaker spring actually worked better than the HD stiff one. Put less stress on the mount. However it did need replacing every other season.

+1 for the roof mount with spring on an XJ. I've helped two guys in the club put a roof mount in on their station wagons, and both have been very happy with the CB performance and durability. I've also seen a very well done rear quarter panel mount on an XJ get completely trashed by trail damage. The honest truth is that a properly done roof mount on an XJ or ZJ will give you better CB performance than any quarter panel mount (or tub/tailgate mount on a YJ/TJ/JK).
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Absolutely agreed! +1

I retract my previous statement about not seeing any problems with antenna's mounted on quarter panels. I forgot poor Jonas' antenna mysteriously disappeared from his quarter panel during a night trail run in Mclean haha!
