yup. believe it or not. Mucho more classy on the inside. This city rules for ethnic foods. Best Donair: 52nd and 17th by Zellers "Desert Cafe". Avocado for Mexican (I would really like any other suggestions for Mexican) or Empanada Queen (behind Marlborough mall). Vietnamese subs right next to the ESSO in Forrest lawn (don't remember the name FFWD Mag named best in Calgary though you should be able to Google). Filipino corner of memorial and 68th = amazingness. I'm a sucker for ethnic foods. Still looking for a cheaper Thai experience as "King and I" = expensive, but good.
Compared to the other cities I've lived in or worked out of (Montreal, Ottawa, Houston, Seattle), Calgary is good for SOME ethnic foods and weak for others. There's very little representation from the Lebanese, East Indian, Greek, and Mexican communities. What Calgary does have going for it is good, cheap, fresh Vietnamese being easily available almost everywhere, and lots of inexpensive Sushi places....as well as a couple of higher end sushi places that do as well as they possibly can given that we're not on the ocean. I doubt that I'll ever be able to find sushi here that is the same as Seattle or Vancouver.
For Thai try Thai Nongkhai right next to Big 4 Motors. Still not cheap, but worth the money.
For Mexican, my two suggestions are Mariachis next to Big 4 Motors, and Tu Tierra at Fairmont and Heritage. Both are run by folks from Mexico, and are as close to authentic mexican as you'll get in Calgary.
For Greek - let me know if you find a really good place.
For Donair, head to XTreme Pita in Airdrie. He makes all his own meat and sauces in-house. If you want Shawarma (Shawarma is to Donair as steak sandwiches are to burgers), Pita Basket Cafe is in a strip mall along Sunridge Way NE. For a more formal (and more expensive) Lebanese dinner experience, you can't beat Aladdin's Casbah in Avenida (one block South from Spinalguy). The owner runs his own charcoal grill, and roasts his own eggplant for babaghanoush.
