You could also look for the 1500HD model which come only in crew cab short box. They have heavy duty suspension, 8 bolt wheels, 6.0L engine, the 4L80 tranny, all on a 1/2 ton frame. You may take a hit on fuel economy but the added power while towing will be worth it. We have a 06 Suburban with the 5.3 and a 04 Yukon Denali with the 6.0L and the difference in fuel economy is nill, but the 6.0 spanks that 5.3 power wise.

The 1500HD is just a light 3/4 ton. It was just called a 1500 to fall into the 1/2 ton financing bracket. The Denali programing is different than a truck program. I've heard that the 6.0L isn't doesn't get very good milage.

The crew extra short 1/2 ton is the same wheel base as the ext-cab shortbox, so it will fit just about anywhere, a good choice in my opinion, but I may be a little biased toward GM products.

I have a 07 1500 sierra classic, crew cab stubby box as my daily driver.  In the city I can get 13.5-14.0 L/100 km (600-650 km/tank) and on the highway 10.8-11.5 L/100 km (850-900 km / tank).  I have the 3.73 gears in mine

The crew cab is great and there is still a decent amount of room in the bed to haul stuff.  I have only towed a 16' boat with mine and it handled it easily

He could tow his ZJ to the trail head, wheel it until it broke down (after all, it's a ZJ), and then start wheeling his tow rig.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

No mods for this! None at all!

All it is getting is a good set of tires, bedliner, tonneau cover, good set of driving lights.
