Off Road Tires in Winter

I have Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour Tires 12.5 x 33 on my rig. Ideally I would like something a bit narrower in the winter but.....you know....$$.
They tend to float rather than dig depending on the conditions.

Question......would these tires be a bit grippier with less air in them or is recommended pressure the way to go?

recommended pressure where? 

the tires state a max pressure only
the vehicle has recommended pressure for stock tires.  say 33lbs
if you are using oversized tires the recommended pressure will be lower, maybe a lot lower... mid 20 lbs perhaps.  a chalk test is a good way to figure it out.
and are you talking offroad or highway?  offroad, 10 lbs is typical for your size on aluminum rims. 
highway you can go to 20 - 25lbs no problem.  might feel a little spongy compared to what you are used to if running them at 30+
I always ran mine around 25 lbs.  too low and resistance is fuel, too high and way too rough ride.

Ahh.....that's interesting. I have them at 32 psi right now but most of my tooling around is in town....max 70 kph.

If I go off road I always air them down to around 25 then pump them up to 32 again.
They are great in the muck when aired down.

I might try them a little softer and see what they are like. Anyone else got any suggestions?

My 33" cooper stt's go down to 8-10psi off road, on the street in summer up to 25psi. Street in winter I go 20 psi.
My truck has 285/75r16 Bridgestone at of some sort. In summer I'll go as high as 40psi for highway and city. But in winter I'll stick to 30psi for most of the time but drop to 20psi if it snows or gets really icey. Deerfoot get interesting even in 4wd...
