Dec 2nd - Trans Alta Road to the Ice Cliffs
« on: November 16, 2017, 10:00:15 AM »
Opening weekend for the "Trail".

Dec 2nd we'll meet at the Husky in Cochrane at 9am heading out shortly after that.
58 W Aarsby Rd, Cochrane, AB T4C 1M1

There's a chance that we may be blocked by that huge hill just after the Ranch and there's potential that the river may not be crossable.
But We'll talk about that out there, worst case we do Lost Knife or Margaret Lake, but it shouldn't be a problem...
We'll stage at Marker #2

As this is an open ride in the winter the following are an absolute must:
Front & Rear Tow Points
M+S rated MT or AT tires (with tread...)
Warm clothes for you/your passengers
Extra food&water for you/your passengers
Recovery Strap
Airing down to 15psi

Recommend:
GMRS/FRS Radio
Shovel
Tire Chains

Should be back in Cochrane between 4/5pm, Plenty of time to run home and make it to any Christmas Parties you may have.

Current Count is at:  7

How about airing down to a maximum pressure of 15psi? Seriously.

Found some interesting resources from an ice climbing forum

Naming and updated routes:
http://gravsports-ice.com/icethreads/uploads/usergals/2016/10/full-101-3384-full_101_3309_ghost_overview.jpg

Their ghost road reports page:
http://www.gravsports-ice.com/icethreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/19179/Ghost_Road_Conditions_-_winter#Post19179

Looks like there was an ice shelf issue but the mild weather took care of it.

Is suspect with a few vehicles in the ditch the road was fairly icy?

Just the 2nd hill, the one that curve.

People hit the brake when it start sliding instead of giving throttle.

Guess what append... When you try to go down with the back going first  ;D

The first hill was icy but not too bad.... Actually even the 2nd one was not bad at all when you kept the wheels on the side and forgot about the brake....

Trappers hill was fine, the S-Hill is where all the problems were.

Copy Paste from facebook:

Thankfully none of our group had any issues! We recovered a rolled over JK, this FJ, looks like someone else recovered that Chris McKeen's Cherokee from the same spot earlier. A dodge ram with studded tires almost went in. a 4runner 180'd but was clear so he just did the last part of the hill backwards.

That JK had no tools, no oil, no recovery gear, hydrolocked with oil... thankfully we had 3+ legit mechanics there

Here's what I got of the FJ's recovery https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcKTKye7BAM

Not sure if this would’ve helped out there; but interesting nonetheless!

Those probably could have gotten them up the cliff on the side. And they might have weighed them down to prevent the roll too.  or at least they would have had the momentum to go all the way over!
