i think u need to find another shop to do your oop they are using you as a cash cow
-
just pick it up and take it else where
and if they wont let you drive it .. tell them u need your keys cuz ull pick it up on the weekend with a trailer and just go get it .
dodge told me i couldnt drive mine when my front bearings where shot .. i just grabed the keys and left
i cant see 2degrees being bad
-
yeah im for sure taking it somewhere elce no doubt about that
-
Ask them to show you how its bent 2 degrees. and which direction. It sounds like a load of turds. Have them park it on the street so you can load it on a trailer. Then get in and drive it away, once its on the street they can't do a thing about it.
-
wow i would like to see a dana 44 with a bent axle please take pics i have only seen a rockwell being bent
-
ask them to see the alignment printout from the alignment they obviously did. I'm an alignment tech and I work at a frame shop. depending on where it's bent, it can be straightened (by the right person). besides, a new housing should only be around 2 grand from dodge. at least they are for the 1-tons. to put it in perspective, Ford twin I-beam IFS.........when you can JUST notice the tire leaning in at the top because the springs are sagged or the ball joints are ready to fall out, that's about 1 degree. Two degrees is looking REALLY bad, especially on the rear. now, if it's the axle shaft, that's an even cheaper story. As a side note, mechanical shops DO NOT have the authority to pull a vehicle off the road, to my knowledge, so they are really trying to screw you around. >:( >:( >:( make sure to ask for a kiss and at least dinner before they "give'er" to you. Just my $.02

they given er hard already, but i seen the alignment sheet and it was out by 2 degrees.. they said it was housing, though i couldn't see it very good on the ground.. and you can slightly see it on the tire if you look close, but they never noticed until they put it on the alignment machine, now probably gonna try to hit up another shop and get another 44 put in.
-
word on the street is you can buy Rubi axles from the factory now for 1400 USD............
pull the axle shafts and make sure its not the axle shaft thats hooped and not hte housing. axle shafts are easier than a new diff
wheres your jeep at? what shop/dealership are you at?

smart automotive in airdrie

Well, you would probably have to work pretty hard to bend that Dana 60....
-
If I was closer, I'd go in there with you. Being a younger guy, I bet they're thinking they can easily take advantage of you.
Tinkerer - Got a link to that website so he can print it off and take it in there for them? That should be enough to get the keys handed back...
-
well thanks for the pointers, imma go in there friday and get it, and gunna make sure of it, luckily on a positive note that all repairs except the axel are done, but i will not return there.. gonna look into seeing if its a housing or not. lets hope its not. i dont wanna change out the axel till i can afford a dana 60 ;D :P
-
just cause the alignment sheet sais its out doesnt mean its out. seriously. is this in a tJ? maybe one of the rear suspension arms is tweeked? so many other factors here. im amazed that a shop would say its a bent housing. does the axle seal leak on that side?
ive been a tech for many years now and shops like that annoy me. give us all a bad name:(
-
How do they know the axle is bent and not the rim?
I pm'd you my buddy's number,.. maybe he can help you out.

My wife's jeep was about 2 years old when she moved here and needed the inspection, the shop said the front rotors had a groove worn in them so they replaced them and not the pads, I'm sure it was a cash grab as I'm sure they couldn't have been that bad, but they sure did squeel after they "fixed" it.
At any rate I just picked up a used D44 from a wrecker knowing one of the axle shaft flanges was bent. The tubes were fine though. If you think about it, to bend a tube would require some pretty extreme forces like a bad rear-end crash. I doubt there is anything wrong with it. Maybe a bent flange but if you didn't notice it before then it can't be that bad.
I looked into getting a new assembly from Chrysler last fall, I was told they don't carry them anymore. I shouldn't speculate but it's almost like the shop wants to flip your old axle.
-
The first xj i got it had a bent axel in the back, Danna 44. you could tell it was bent when driving it verry noticeable.
i just took it out and put it in the lathe to c where it was bent, it was out 0.200 :o took it to the press and goter within .003 runnout. axel houseing was fine.

well now they claim that the ''bent axel'' could be that there is a bushing messed up in the suspension.. does that sound like it could be the issue??

Just read this thread & as a Liscensed Journeyman Technician I have to say that this shop sounds like they are treating you like a "revenue opportunity". That term is the polite way of saying that they are sh!t heads & they are ripping you off
Just an FYI for everyone: IT IS ILLEGAL FOR AN AUTOMOTIVE SHOP TO REFUSE THE RELEASE OF A VEHICLE FOR ANY OTHER REASON THAN LACK OF PAYMENT.
In Alberta automotive shops have no ability to hold a vehicle against the customer's will for mechanical reasons. If your car is a "Death Trap" and you want to fix nothing they have to release your vehicle to you once you pay your bill. They can call the police or Alberta transportation but that is all they can do and the truth is that in Alberta neither will accomplish much.
This really burns me because it gives all shops & technicians a bad name. No wonder people hate us more than dentists ;D
I you want the name of a good, trustworthy shop that has some of the cheapest pricing in the city & can do your OOP send me a PM & I will give you the name & number.
On a side note I know the performance group that Smart Automotive belongs to & this managment training group teaches Service writers and Managers to price gouge & then helps them to feel good about it so they can sleep at night. I would not reccomend any shop that is a member of this performance group. I know this for a fact because my Wife used to service write for a shop that belongs to the same group, until she got fed up.

Just take your Jeep ELSEWHERE man! Don't reconsider now that they are trying to throw an easier and cheaper solution at you. Look like you have been PM'ed two recomended shops #'s, check them out.

I'd say that this place wasn't even going to bother buying you dinner before they got busy with you. Now that you're kicking up a fuss, they're willing to spring for dinner...but they're still after the same thing.
Find a new shop. This one is obviously staffed by or operated by folks who want to stick it to anyone who walks through the door.
You'll be far better served in the long run by finding a shop that will do what you need done...not what will see them make the most money.

well i finally get her back ;D ;D.. needs rear lights fixed for sure, other then that (hopefully) she should be goood
