i thave a 1994 jeep grand cherokee 4 liter with the np 242 transfre case (NOT AWD)
my issue is im driving and get around 60 kms an hour she dont want to go any faster she just climbes the rpms
so im on the hunt for a tranny asap this is my daily driver
im wondering what yours of cherokees and grand cherokees will work ?
i have a tranny out of an 86 avail to me its 4 liter np 242 t case all the same but is it?
been doing some reading some say its a toyota tranny some say to change valve body but no definate answer on model numbers for the trannys?
im wondering about electronics in tranny r they different?
basicial need to know what will work so i know what to look for thats compatible
your help on this subject would be greatly appreciated :-\

You need a 42RE (auto) or an AX-15 (manual)
-
where are the model numbers located on the tranny?
-
could aslo be a AW4 ..... if the shifter bezel shares one position for 1 and 2 gears it is an AW4, otherwise probably a 42re. Standard trannies in ZJ are rare ( 93 models )
-
AW4 is the only automatic shared with the ZJ and only in the first part of '93. I doubt your '94 has one. You are stuck with getting another one out of a ZJ with a 4.0L.
Fixing yours may not be too bad. Is it slipping or not upshifting?
-
I feel compelled to make a joke over your thread title, but... must... stay... family... friendly
-
I have faith that I can edit myself to stay relatively family friendly.
Ru Paul is probably to tall to fit well in to ZJ, but most other trannies would work well.
-
An AW4 can be swapped in apparently. google it, and there is a writeup on mallcrawlin.com about how to do it. its a straight in swap it looks like..........the 42RE you need came in 93 - early 2000 ZJs and WJs with the 4.0L. good luck finding one. they are rare........ (at least in good shape!)
-
42RE - 93 to early 99 are all the same and can be used, the late 99 and on are all 42RE's but you cannot use this transmission due to the torque converter and valvebody being different.
As for swapping in the AW4 Trans, this should be fairly easy swap to do as you have the OBDI computer/electronics..
P.S.
I was the one who sent a reply to your wanted ad on kijiji stating the above sentence.
cheers!

Now that I think about this more, there is going to be an issue with the input shaft length on the t-case if he grabs a trans from anything different from a 93-95 correct? Also, keeping in mind the gear cut change in 95, can someone shed some light on this?
Also, what has been done thus far to determine that a new trans is required?
How's the fluid? ATF4 is being used correct?
***Edit***
As I suspected... I hope this helps..

-off topic- op you wouldn't happen to be the guy at pnp looking for a transmission would you?
-
FIRST OFF I KNOW QUESTION SOUNDS STUPID
second no im not the one from pnp
third i cant get my truck to go faster than 80 other than going down hill it seems to shift fine if you try to accelerate it just revs to 4 thou rpm i have checked the fluid is brown and stinks
i also tried the cruise controll to get upto 100 but she just revs higher
i have also done a flush and added lucas anti slip and used atf+4 like your supposto no change
like i said i can get a tranny but its out of an 89 cherokee but was told its not the same and wont work
but noone knows the reason exactly
i was also told the only one i could use was 42re from the 93 to 98 grand cherokee
i have also been offered one from a 92 was told it will work as long as i have the 4 liter
this 42 re is a challange to find as it seems they all have the same problem
i also found an article saying this was a toyota trans? beats me
the more i can learn and figure out the better
-
also is the aw4 not the same as the baby cherokees?
-
XJ=Regular Cherokee(aka Baby cherokee)
ZJ=Grand Cherokee
XJs use the AW4 tranny(which is also used in some Toyota Supras, good luck finding one from a Toyota). It was also used in ZJs ONLY in early '93. Its not what you have in yours and will not swap in without changing other stuff. Its a computer controlled tranny and your Jeep doesn't have the computer or wiring to support it. Most of the custom AW4 swaps I've heard of don't retain the computer and go to a full manual shift setup. Matching t-case and driveshafts may also be required to swap in an AW4.
Sounds like your tranny isn't upshifting past 2nd or 3rd gear. This could be a problem in the valve body and not require a whole new tranny. I suggest consulting a tranny shop.
For a direct swap you will need a 42re tranny from a ZJ. ZJs were only made from '93-98. A '92 would be an XJ and have an aw4.

Thanks for clearing that up Clay as I'm just learning about the 4.0 as we go along here..
ALL 4.0 ZJ's 93-98 (with the exception of early 93) used the same 42RE transmission, however with different output shafts to fit different transfer case input shaft lengths. So depending on the length of the shafts will permit a direct swap or not, but you could always swap the one from your old trans. You can also use the early 99 42re but this will be harder to find.

thank you for the clairification
i just went through all this with my dad he just bought a 97 off kijiji that needed a tranny thy guy had one to go with it but it is out of a 93 so it will work for my gc but not his so i will see what happens here shortly
also with my trans in my gc when i pulled the pan there was some bigger shaveings in there which leads me tro believe there is a bigger issue other than the valve body but i plan to take it in once i get it out will keep you posted
on this whole thing i found a shop that will rebuild the tranny for 1200 but the rebuild kit to buy is way less wondering if i should tear into this my self and see how smart i am lol i found exploded views of tranny on line here doesent look to bad
-
Why didn't it work for your Dad's jeep?
Note that the 4.0L and 5.2L use different bell housing patterns and thus the trannys are not interchangable.
-
heres another one about the jeep trannies a friend of mine was telling me he was having issues with the trans not shifting
and same kind of issues as im haveing he went to pick n pull and changed his tps sensor ?? he said it made a world of difference?? this makes absolutely no sense to me especially when it wasnt throwing codes? or acting like the tps was going any ideas
-
The tranny is computer controled, the TPS(Throttle Position Sensor) tells the tranny how much throttle is being applied. At full throttle(foot to the floor) the tranny computer holds off the upshift for as long as possible. IF the TPS was bad and showing full throttle all of the time it would have delayed upshifts and touchy downshifts.
'93 ZJs are OBDI and the tranny computer doesn't talk to the engine computer and does not give error codes.
-
well i have changed the selinoid and sensor in side the trans still no change checked all fuses they are all good not getting any codes either when you step on the gas theres like a hissing sound as if there was a vaccume line leak but its not that i have checked everything anyone else have any ideas??
-
Plugged catalytic converter. The hissing is coming out of your EGR or an exhaust leak.
-
well just cut the cat off today but havent got a chance to go for a spin yet so we will see
also that cherokee my dad bought is a 97 the trans that came with it was suposidly from a 93 will work on his jeep
his origional trans has the 4 plug inside as does the other one so my question is why r the shafts different on the tail the sp;ine on one goes right to the end the other does not ? we tested to see if t case goes on and it does ? seen a article where it says it wont but it does also his is the awd one not the 4x4 so kind of confused bout some info on here i need more input on this stuff any info helps we r going to put the trans in tommorow so we will see what happens i guess
-
When my cat plugged up the insides broke up and traveled down to the muffler and plugged up the muffler. Shine a flashlight into the muffler and see how it looks as well. Or just take it for a spin with the exhaust open and see how it does.
'93 ZJs are obd 1 and a '97 is obdII. That is the only reason I can think of for the wiring/electronics to be different. If you are swapping a tranny from a 4.0 into a 4.0(regardless of year) the output shafts should be the same. But I was of the understanding that a OBDI tranny wouldn't swap into an OBDII system and vice versa.
My experience is mostly with the V8 though. If you find differently let me know.
-
If you took the cat off you need to reinstall a new one. I had mine off and it made the Jeep run like crap.
-
Was there an O2 sensor in it? If so then the O2 sensor needs to be put back into the system. Usually the cat is replaced with a straight pipe that has a bung on it for a O2 sensor.
Some friends of mine had a TJ that they cut the cat off years ago and didn't do anything with the O2 sensor, they always complained about poor mileage. Finally they got a muffler shop to put a bung in and a sensor. Mileage came back up as well they reported a power increase as well.
-
well i cut the cat and muffler off works great
my jeep did not have the second 02 sensor on the cat just the one on the exaust manifold so its working fine sounds ok too
the hissing is gone and shes back to normal
seems tranny issue isnt what it thought it was was stupid muffler and cat made it seem like trans was screwy
im gonna change my tps now and see if theres any more difference
i will keep everyone posted
thanks to all for your help and advise on this
and the 97 cherokee is alive as well we got the trans done and is working great no problems with the out put shafts or any thing all works well 8) again thanks to all for your info and help
-
oh i for got to add my muffler weighed like 30 pounds lol and there was just a big ol blob of junk in the cat now i have a nice set of paper weights lol
-
is that the 97 purple ZJ your dad got from me? if so, glad the tranny works and someone got it on the road
-

Good to hear that was the problem. As soon as you said it made a hissing sound it sounded off alarm bells in my my head.
Had a similar problem years ago with my XJ. Was on a trip to Montana and couldn't get over 80km/h and fuel mileage was horrible. Found the EGR completely melted out and tons of back pressure escaping thru the port. Pulled into a campground for a night and pulled off the exhaust and found the insides of the cat in the muffler. Next morning drove to Crowsnest with the muffler strapped to the roof and had a new system put on, sans the CAT. All was good and trip resumed. Fortunately my XJ was a stick so I new it wasn't the tranny.
-
yep thats the 97 she looks good new we replaced the window took like 20 min trans took 2 days shes all shampooed and looks sexy got tons of go dad says hey you wouldnt know where we could find another matching rim for the other 3 lol we also replaced the lower arm that commects to the diff she was bent
-
no clue on the rim man, sorry. hey i say your dad was trying to sell this on kijiji for 4850$? pretty steep; i'd have fixed and sold it if it were worth that!. i thought he was fixin' it up for your mom? meh, what can ya do?
