Is there a way to rig up the factory stereo so I can use an IPOD/MP3 in the Jeep TJ without having to spend the price of a new stereo?

Monster FM transmitter for IPOD? I'm guessing you'll get frustrated with it though and end up with a new head unit.
The factory one in my 02 wouldn't play burnt CD's let alone MP3's. It's since been long gone.

If the factory stereo has the AUX input, you're golden. My 04 doesn't so I have to use the FM transmitter on my Sirus unit which as bit of a bother in the city :( but works great in the bush :)

IMO the cost for a deecent aftermarket head unit with an Aux output is relatively cheep and less of a headake then trying to run an FM transmitter in the city

You could try this MOPAR® iPod Integration Kit (Depending on the radio you have) (http://www.quadratec.com/products/96080_9000.htm) I have one...HOWEVER:
I have a '06 Rubicon with a 6 CD changer and bought this. It sits behind my instrument cluster and plugs into the radio in the remote CD magazine plug. The iPod cable runs to the glove box.
If I did it again, with what I know now, I'd replace the stereo instead. Why?
1) the MOPAR device was made when the iPod receives power through the firewire portion of the iPod connector. Now, I had to buy an adapter (between the MOPAR cable and the iPod so it supplies power).
2) the radio's functionality to control playlists, albums, aritists, etc. is limited, and I had to spend hours editing properties fields in iTunes so I could skip through albums alphabetically the way it is supposed to work (though it worked fine in the iPod itself).
3) The cost of a new radio (with the same or better iPod functionality) is less than the cost of the MOPAR adapter. I got the Integration kit from Chrysler here in Calgary - $350.00 plus tax and $50.00 for the power adapter. (the CDN/USD was not on par at the time)
I hope this helps...but check here SONY® AM/FM CD Stereos and Custom Installation Kits (http://www.quadratec.com/Showcases/sony_stereo_head_units/default.php) for radios that might suit your needs.

When i bought my TJ it had after market stero, so i dunno if this works but...
i know you can buy tape cassettes with a cable coming out that plugs into your headphone jack on your mp3 player. I know this because i use this at home in my stereo to play my ipod through. This is a very inexpensive way to do it BUt of corse, requires that the radio had a casette player. which i dont know if it does or not. I personally use a Monster FM cable, after using it you dont know the drop in quality...but you can buy new decks for like 150 with a mp3 jack
just my idear
