1. My caster bolt came loose and was out of alignment.....2nd time
2. Have a trac lock lsd
3. Excessive play on both sides when pushing the wheel side to side on the D30
My main concern is #3, the driverside has Lots of play when I push it I can actually see the U joint move alittle along with the axle shaft. The Jeep drives completely normal and shows no signs of this problem. Now I installed an aussie locker in this axle over a month ago and its been working fine since.
I have heard this "play" is a sign of bad hub unit. Again no problem except the play which I know is not normal, any advice? I'm tempted to ignore it....but I know better
And yes, the wheels are bolted on tight, and everybolt near the knuckle is tight as it should be
Edit: I don't think its a hub unit due to the fact the jeep only has 40k kms

U joints
-
U joints are rock solid and don't budge a millimeter, the whole axle shaft and U joint move togther.
Seems like the Unit bearings are on their way out. Mud causes premature wear, I am just going to keep an eye on it for now.... watch the tire wear. Probably wait until it gets worse before I do anything. its odd that both the driver and passenger side went at the same time.
-
Isn't that the unit bearing, then?
-
Yeah i guess i was in denial and posted a pointless thread.... the jeeps got 40K its an 04 and I have only owned it for 1 year june 16th. It's never been offroad before i got it and I have only done mud like 4 times in the year I've owned it. I am still running the stock rims with stock back spacing. Givin that they both have playI am entering anger stage right now.

you drive a jeep. get used to it.
mud = destruction of parts........... don't get angry at it man. just learn how to swap them out so they dont' cost you an arm and a leg.
on a semi seriously note; stuff like this you have to learn, otherwise wheeling will be a very expensive sport for you.........

Where the keys in the ignition and the steering wheel locked at the time of the tire wiggle?
-
if its your unit bearing i would change them both out
and do it befor they seporate and then you loose your wheel while driving
ive replaced mine 3 times in just under 2 years . get used to it
-
No the keys weren't in etc etc. but after taking the rotor off it was obvious what was loose
3 bearings in 2 years Yes it does Sound like its going to be regular maintenance,Hell yes I am doing this myself. I have got a $60 socket set from canadian tire and no inhibitions
-
atta boy.
only tools really needed other than your standard set is a 13MM 12pt socket for the hub, and a 36MM for the axle nut. it can be done in the drive way.
remember to antisieze all the bolts so next time you change em its quick!
-
Yea man you dont want your tire to fall off while driving. that would just be terrible -_-
if you need help gimme a call
ps. my socket set is shinier and the jeeps like shinier
-
its very easy .. and im sure there are more then enough people to give you a hand
my room mate learned how to change my second set and she didnt have to much trouble .. i just had to break the bolts free and she did the rest her self
then i just tightened everything a bit more after she was done
and you best off buying the socket for the axle because youll be useing it alot more often ;D ;D

You should NOT be putting anti-sieze on the bolts that hold the unit bearings in the knuckle. If anything, you should be using lock-tite. You REALLY don't want those bolts coming loose.
Also, if you ONLY have play side to side, and not up and down as well, chances are it's NOT a unit bearing. Check your steering linkage.
If it's a bearing, you should be able to feel play no matter where you put your hands. 12&6, 9&3, or anywhere in between, you should feel play with a bad bearing.
-
The anti-sieze should be put on the mating surface between the unit bearing and knuckle, it'll make removing the assembly far easier in the future.

good luck busting that loose when you break an axle on the trail.........

comon .. man up a bit . its only a 13 mm bolt .. i dont anti seize mine nor do i locktite them and there easy to get off but not backing out by them selves
have fun

Buy the one with the best warranty. Cuz you will likely do them more than once. ;D
-
The autovalue bca brand is pretty good, 75 ft lbs on the hub bolts and you should be fine.
-
Thanks for the offer to help me change the bearings but I already got them pulled out I just need to put them in now
As for the brand Everyone offers 1 year warrenty. Autovalue has the lifetime warrenty against manufacturers defects not wear and tear. So Maybe I'll buy a 125 and a 150 dollarbearing and see which one lasts longer.....
-
In the end
I got the BCA bearings from autovalue 159 bucks the guy strongly recomended it over the $125 Partsmaster bearing for offroad use claiming better quality and life in general. Don't know how true this is but I opted not to go the cheapest route.
I purchased some impact sockets at princess auto on sale and a cheap Canadain tire impact gun which made things about 100X easier.
Removal and installation was very straight forward and my bearings came out easily with the help of a rubber mallet. All went smoothly and I got some tools to use for the next job.
Thanks everyone for your advice
