Title: winch solenoids
Post by: JackstandJohnny on September 15, 2010, 08:52:42 AM
from an M8000.

anyone know where to get replacements? modern carries them, but they're 40$ a piece; i'd like to find a cheaper alternative; does NAPA/autovalue carry something similar? i've got one of the old solenoids with me, i was just gonna go match up......

Call amperage, or I've heard RV's have solenoids that match up.

Good luck!

I got one from Greg's Distributors for the 8274

just had a good chat with the guys at amperage.
think i'm just going to bring the winch down there; test the motor and make sure its not fubared before swapping out 150$ worth of solenoids.

A solenoid is super easy to test if you got access to a mulitmeter. No need to spend $150 or tear the whole winch apart if its just a solenoid.

I read somewhere that if you have easy access to the leads on the motor, you can just hook the battery straight up to test the motor.

This was for the 8274 though, and, I have no idea which way it'll turn, so you probably want to pull some line free first, in case it pulls in.

In an emergency where it only powers out, not in (like I had happen on a trail during a recovery), you can switch the motor leads inside the solenoid box or if you have enough slack, outside it and now the winch will power in, but not out.

tested the solenoids tonight. i hooked up the battery charger to the small posts on the solenoids and CLICK, all 4 of them sparked and clicked............... then i touched the ohm meter to the big terminals i got no reading on the ohm meter......... it read 1 or what not.

gonna retest tonight with the ohm meter on it to ensure currents geting through.........

The one that packed it in on mine must have been the inside contacts, because it clicks, but no current gets through.

For the series-wound (no permanent magnet) winches (think 3 wires to the motor [f1, f2, A], not 2), here is the motor test procedure:
Warn Motor Testing Procedure

If you find yourself in a situation where your winch is clicking but it is not working, you may have a motor problem....or you may have a solenoid problem.  The following procedure, from Warn, will help you determine the status of your winch motor.

1. Put the winch in freespool.

2. Disconnect the positive lead from the battery (leave the ground lead attached).

3. Label and disconnect the three cables that run from the control pack to the three posts on the motor.

4. Stamped next to the three posts on the motor will be "A", "F1" and "F2". Run a small jumper wire (5"-6" dead lead, 8 ga. will work just fine) from "A" to "F1" and put power from the battery (jumper cables work good) to "F2". The winch motor should run in one direction at this time.

5. Next, place the jumper wire from "A" to "F2" and put power from the battery to "F1". The winch motor should run in the opposite direction at this time.

If these steps are followed correctly and the motor runs in both directions, the motor is good.

If the motor is good, then the solenoids that are active should have very little to no voltage drop across them. Measure across the large terminals with the good motor hooked up and them activated. The active one(s) with voltage are bad. The inactive ones will have voltage!  Try the other direction to test the other two solenoids if necessary.

Since the solenoids on the XD9000i require pulling the case apart, I'm considering some externally mounted ones.  I suspect that any continuous-duty 400A rated solenoids would work (lol).

thanks all

tinkered with it last night; i've come to beleive solenoids are good.  they all open/close and with current going through them the ohms meter reads 0.00: so theres continuity right?

bypassed solenoids to winch motor;  it turned once, sounded like a dying dog.  reversed direction; nothing.  tried it the other way again; nothing.  not even a spark........

my guess is motor is fried.

fraser was kind enough to lend me his motor on his old winch; i'm gonna hook it up, and see if it works, just to make sure my solenoid boxes are good.

just wondering if these replacement motors are worth it
