Hi everybody, I couldn't help but notice there is a "members only" run planned for Nov 6. It also happens it's my friend's birthday and he loves to go wheeling. I have planned ahead of time to take him to Mclean Creek for a little run with my stock JK ( sahara ). Is the run still ON for this first weekend of November, and would I be able to join with whoever is going? I wouldn't feel very comfortable wheeling by myself with non-mud tires. Also, is this run for Mclean Creek? haha thx in advance and sorry for the noob questions
-
Questions are okay! :)
The trail leader for any given run has the final say as to who can and can't come. The trail leader for the run on the 6th is SpecialK. I don't want to put words in his mouth here, but he and I have talked a little bit about this run. Based on what he's posted in the member's section:
-This run will not be at McLean Creek
-This will not be a good run for people that don't have MT (or VERY good AT) type tires
-The minimum requirements for this run are currently 33 inch tires and a working winch
-A stock JK Sahara would have a LOT of difficulty with the trail that SpecialK is considering. JK's are capable rigs for sure - but I would hazard a guess that you would not enjoy the process of abusing your new JK hard enough to get it through what he's got in mind. Based on the fact that you've got a stock Sahara, I honestly doubt that you would make it through unless it was on the end of someone else's winch calbe. :-\ Even taking all the bypasses and being pulled through the stuff that doesn't have bypasses, you'd probably finish the run with some pretty good body damage. I'm not talking about "Rocky Mountain Pinstriping" - this would be some rather more serious body damage.
The other things that I would add as general statements about "member's" runs:
-They are generally more challenging than most of the "open" runs.
-While non-members have occasionally come on these runs, it is generally a "by invitation only" situation. If a member invites a non-member on one of these more challenging runs, they are generally responsible for guiding/escorting/pulling ??? the non-member through the run.
-Runs like this one also generally call for a bit more "not on the list" equipment. Generally, you'll want to bring enough "personal" equipment that you could stay overnight in a remote area, an axe, a saw of some sort, a shovel, extra food, extra water, extra clothing, and a pretty comprehensive selection of tools, spares for parts that are likely to break, and some spare fluids.
In conclusion, SpecialK is the person that would have to decide if you can go on that run...but I think that you might want to gain some extra experience at wheeling and get your Jeep a little better prepared before tackling runs like that one. :)

Thank you so much for the information ! that's exactly what I wanted to know. The 35's are coming after winter so is the lift, rite now im just wheeling to see where my limitations lie with my stock jk. This run does sound out of my league, I think ill just go play in the mud over at Mclean Creek then! Have a good run guyz!
-
your jk would not be happy on such a run................ the term 'trail rated' can mean quite a few things; usually entials to 'deerfoot trail rateed though'.......................
i hear waiparous is nice this time of year....

Well said W Squared.
Anyone out there want to do a run on the 6th at McLean? If there is a member you want to lead, we can make it a 'offical' run on the calendar.
At 1stJeep - I'm sure some people will post up a join you on the 6th.
-
haha, that would be awesome, I never went wheeling with a group before. I usually go by myself because I'm the only one out of my friends who drives a Jeep.

I would recommend never going solo for safety purpose...please look on the open run forum...there are always people going during the week-end. You can also post up and most likely a few jeeps will follow.
Safety first... things happen real quick on a trail and you never get into a pickle on purpose. There is a gentlemen that passed away on an accident a few weeks ago. He made a mistake that turned real bad and lost his life. He was not wheeling alone and still didn't make it.His Friend tried to saved his and did the best they could but his injuries were too severe. God bless him and his family.
Please be safe and try to find someone to go out wheeling with when you go in the bush.
If you have ANY questions ...please do not be shy to ask.. People will help here.
Thanks,
Dom

Now who's going whelling on the 6th with 1stjeep.ro ? ;D
-
I'm working on Sat but it were the 7th I'd be glad to come along. If its important go to on the day of his birthday I guess that won't work but if you just wanna get out with some jeeps on that weekend I can help you guys out.
-
that's too bad cuz we do intend to go on Saturday. Also what are some good trails that are noob-stocker friendly jeep trails out at Mclean?
-
Mclean isn't very friendly on any jeep (read: pretty rough going but if you don't mind minor abuse and take your time it's not that bad) but a good trail to run is Fisher West.
-
How's the waiparous ? Ive never been there
-
Both McLean and Waiparous can offer some trails that are friendly to stock jeeps. I'd suggest that you go with someone that knows the trails at least reasonbly well though. They can help you out when you get stuck, and can hopefully keep you on the appropriate trails and out of the biggest holes.
-
I'd like to know where this extra tough trail is if it isnt at Mclean. I've been down just about every twist and turn at Waiparous (winter and summer) and the description sure doesnt seem to match anything out there.
I get that the 6th run is members only... but this non-member sure would be interested in another location to wheel from time to time beyond Mclean and Waiparous.
If you dont want it posted public... i'd gladly take a private message. ;D
Or if you just dont want to tell me... i can respect that too. No one likes to give up their best "fishing hole" to just anyone. Though i figured it was worth asking regardless. ;)
-
Are you saying Waiparous is a difficult bunch of trails?
-
Meh... Waiparous has its spots that can be a little tricky... just depends where and WHEN you go.
My last trip out there was after about 2 weeks of heavy rain. I didnt realize just how brutal a couple sections of the trail were going to be. It actually made 1 bypass completely impossible and i was "forced" into a tank trap type hole. Thankfully... i was able to drive out of it... but it could certainly have been worse.
If you stick to the main trail out there, Waiparous Valley Road straight out to the falls, its not bad by any means. There are a couple spots that can get tricky depending on the time of year... but its generally a simple run.
-
Ok, it's official then, I'm gonna hit the Waiparous on saturday! Let me know if anybody wants to join me, otherwise im going solo!
-
As others have said in many other posts to many other people... solo is a bad idea.
Specailly if you have no way to recover yourself from a bad situation... if that photo of yours is current... you dont even have a winch if you got into a tough spot.
I'm in no way telling you what you have the right to do or not... but the suggestion that "solo is a bad idea" comes from experience and having seen what can happen very quickly on a "nice easy run".
:)
Best of luck regardless of your choice. Waiparous is a beautiful place to wheel.
-
I would not go solo, there is ice out there covering the mud holes but it does break under the weight of a vehicle. I got stuck in a few spots the other day simply because ice wedged in behind my front and rear. it is definitely wheel at your own risk if you go alone. If you do go by yourself, have a time you will call someone on your way out and they know where you are going.
-
make sence, I'll probably go for a reconnaissance mission to see whats going on for terrain and i might get somebody with a truck to come with us
-
just my 2cents going solo is bad idea at least try and have 1-2 extera 4x4's with u. May long this year I ran a trail out in McLean by myself because a buddy of mine was down from Edmonton full on knowing the trouble we could get in to we still decide to go out alone and broke my front trak bar bracket in two. on one of the hill climbs going up the backside of the world and this is in a very cabable/ built jeep we managed to hold it together with my winch and get it back to the road. I will say this never again will I run trail alone just because a buddy was down that I haven't seen in 2 years. the ice out there is deceiving some times u could drive over it and be fine or it breaks out from under you i had that happen to may times to the ones following me and is sucks trying to get them out very hard on both vehicles depending on how deep the water under the ice is. if my rig wasn't in pieces right now I'd take the day off work and join.
I hope the pics I have attached are OK just some pics of some potental damage and incidents that can occur. During winter Wheeling/ going offloading alone

Hi , just wanted to thank After6beers that showed me the ropes at Mclean Creek yesterday at the " top of the world" and Woody, your jeep is badass!
-
No problem...your buddy did a wicked job coming down "Steps". Hopefully we can do it again soon. Only a few more weeks of Maclean so I will probably be going out at least one day every weekend so let me know.
