Title: TJ rims what should I do?
Post by: JackstandJohnny on November 02, 2010, 11:34:53 AM
picked up these rims off Kijiji.  not sure what i want to do with them as of yet.  some of them have some clear coating issues and i'm not sure if i should paint these puppies with tremclad, or just leave them as is.

or if someone knows how to clean up the aluminum so the bad ones don't look so bad i'm listening.

what do you think?

Probably not as cleanly as blasting them

A wire wheel might gouge pretty bad and it'd be awkward to get into some spaces on the wheels.  One of the fellows at the office here striped the coating off his mazda 3 wheels last fall.  Just put some sort of goop on them and it eats the coating off.  I believe it washes off after that.  Then you'd just have to buff them.  I guess it depends on how nice you want them to look.

I think Top Gun coatings can do it John. Just wire wheel it, clean it well, prime well and then paint. Its held up fine for mine.

Yep, Top Gun Coatings has refinished Wheels for me in the past.
They do really good work. I've had things done on my Harley, and my hot rod.

There is a do it yourself place that Ron has used.

Consolidated Compressor in the foothills area is a DIY sandblasting place. I believe they charge by the minute.

The goop is aircraft paint remover it eats and gells the paint, then it just washes off. Then I'd go and get some duplicolor gunmetal 0r graphite wheel paint and spray them with that.

gunmetal 0r graphite would look sweet. Or even chrome paint. Just be careful to not get the paint running.... it will look worse than normal paint that has runs in it.

black is good but I seem to have developed a grey fetish. Was holding out for a grey WJ, but the blue W  was too good to pass up. My burb is graphite, and at some point there's going to be more grey on the Z as well. I painted the GMC reflector in the grill of my old truck with that wheel paint and it stood up really well. And it has a little texture to like powder coating.

get them powdercoated at Top Gun, when i built my probe parts i had all of them powder coated there, it was fast and quality work. i've done my sandblasting at Consolidated Compressor 9516 40 Street Se. when i was there it was something like $85 per hour and you can blast as much as you want in that time frame.

Well, if the cladding is going black the wheels might as well be black as well. Have youconsidered gator guarding all the way up to the body line? Just to be different? ???

hey esi, where do you find this aircraft paint remover??  I have a set of wheels that I would really like to try this on.

-=edit=-

I found this place:

Smith-McLeay Coatings (http://www.superpages.ca/bus/Alberta/Calgary/Smith-McLeay-Coatings-Ltd/1463443.html?adid=14119449aa).  Apparently they sell it.

Consolidated Compressor
http://www.yellowpages.ca/bus/Alberta/Calgary/Consolidated-Compressor/424210.html

The fee is around $100 per HR to use the equipment. Four rims should be less than 1/2hr. If someone else needs stuff done split the cost. Its good and more efficient to have a helper to move stuff around while your in the hood doing the sand basting. Last time I went we did my rebuilt tire carrier  and Rons' diff in 1 Hr. All parts down to clean metal.  I have used the equipment a few times in an hour you can clean more parts and do a better job then if you spent a whole day with a wire brush.

that aircraft paint remover looks sweet, now I want to find something to strip for the hell of it...

Johnny do that, then let me try some of the left overs :P

and that gunmetal grey does look nice, but on a dark green jeep, with gator guarded black cladding, I think the grey would look funny. I'm still thinking black.

on a side note, I do like that gloss black I stole last night for my rear handle, it looks good, I'll have to pick up a can and do the door handles tonight.

the goop was 9 bux.  but it didnt' do anything. note, there was no paint to strip; just the clear coat.....  i ended up sanding.  in short, they look ok.  the spare looks like crap, but meh, what can you do?  pics will come eventually ;)

I have used the aircraft paint stripper stuff in the past and it worked great on the clear coat too, took a few tries as it would make the clear really gummy and some patches did not want to come off, but it worked nicely, that and trying to sand blast them will leave them very pitted and take forever to get looking good, there are likely other forms of blasting that work well, but sand does not work well on aluminum from experience.
