A couple people have said to me that they would like to wheel the Waiparous winter trails one last time before closing (they close on the 15th).
I'd love to head down for another run, of course this won't be an official CJA run but if there are a few people willing, post here and let us know.
If enough people can make it, same drill as usual - 9:00 at Smitty's, head out at 9:30. If I'm leading, it'll be a stock rig friendly run, so don't be worried about bringing a stock rig. And we won't get lost, I have a GPS that is readable LOL
Forecast for Saturday right now is +3C so bring your scuba gear...
EDIT:
Usual requirements;
- 31" tires in good conditions and a full sized spare
- Vehicle mechanically sound
- Tow points front and rear
- Recovery strap
- Be prepared to air down to 15psi or so
- Spare fluids for your rig
- Basic hand tools
- All of the lights on your rig must work
- Plenty of food and water for everyone in the vehicle
- Clothing appropriate to the wearther (boots, gloves, hats), and a change of clothes and shoes for everyone in the vehicle
- CB or FS radio is a plus
- Valid drivers license
- Valid registration and insurance for your vehicle
Since it's not an official CJA event you won't have to sign a waiver, but be prepared for scratches, damage, and any other possible outcomes that Offroad driving can entail. :-)
This run will be open to anyone who wants to join, Jeep or otherwise. It should be a fun day for everyone.
EDIT 2:
Since this is a fun run, let's make it good for the community too. Please bring a non-perishable food donation for the Food Bank, or a cash donation (I'd suggest $5) to go with the food donations. Since I'm from Red Deer, the donations will go to the Red Deer Food Bank. This won't be required to wheel that day on this run, but it sure would be nice if you are able to help the people who need it. Thanks everyone!
EDIT 3:
I will bring along my spare handheld CB with magnetic antenna, in case someone doesn't have any radio at all. I've got a pair of FRS radios somewhere here, I'll dig them out and bring them along too. We will use CB channel 11 and if needed FRS channel 11.

I think it was more than once ;D

Only once :P

I am game for sure. I spent a small fortune getting this locker setup in January and have yet to try it out. See you all on Saturday AM.
-
I should be in for this one as well
-
Never been winter wheeling in ghost, but i know the area really well what can i expect for difficulty?
also how far and where do you guys usually go? i am guessing that with all the snow we would keep to wiaparous valley road as far back as we can get?

It's pretty simple wheeling - the snow pack is really thick so other than ice on some of the hills it's pretty easy driving as long as you have decent tires. The scenery is incredible though, if you get the chance to pay attention.

There are a set of trails that are only open for a few winter months, so we take them. How far we go depends more on how many rigs have trouble with breakdowns. Here is a link to the Alberta SRD Winter-only trail map:
http://srd.alberta.ca/MapsFormsPublications/Maps/documents/Ghost-New4x4WinterTrailPoster-Dec2009.pdf (http://srd.alberta.ca/MapsFormsPublications/Maps/documents/Ghost-New4x4WinterTrailPoster-Dec2009.pdf)
And here is a link to all of the Ghost FLUZ maps so you can get an idea of where everything is in relation to the summertime maps:
http://srd.alberta.ca/RecreationPublicUse/RecreationOnPublicLand/ForestLandUseZones/GhostFLUZMapsPublications.aspx (http://srd.alberta.ca/RecreationPublicUse/RecreationOnPublicLand/ForestLandUseZones/GhostFLUZMapsPublications.aspx)
So if we don't spend the whole day fixing rigs, we will hit as many trails as possible. If you haven't done the winter trails there is some new scenery for you to enjoy. And with the super warm weather it will be alot of fun!

70% in!!!!

EDIT:
All the usual CJA requirements apply - you must have front and rear recovery points, tow straps, full size spare, no alcohol or drugs, rig in good running order, valid license and registration.
Where can i find a list of the official CJA requirements or is that it ?
I am familiar with Tread Lightly, i am thinking more vehicle requirements or specific CJA rules.
-
Min requirements are as Pinchy listed in his first post
This is NOT an official CJA run

Requirements are up to the organizer for non-CJA sanctioned events like this one. So my apologies, I've updated the list of requirements above.

No winners though. ;)
-
Make sure you bring rubber boots or something waterproof for this ride - there is a very high likelihood we will see some wet sections! The weather is sure shaping up to be great for the last winter ride, make sure you don't miss it!

is that for a wired or wireless keyboard...............if wireless I will trade for beer ;D
-
i have limited experience with waiparous, just a few solo picnics out there to explore the roads. What are the plans for destination? I've heard it's a beautiful area in the winter time, and i'd love a chance to bring my camera and take some pics....
-
Take a look at the maps I posted links to earlier. You will get some spectacular pictures, there are a few spots where the view is amazing.
-
I'm in :)
-
Please be careful; it will be icy.
Since we had warm weather this week and it's cold today; there will be lots of ice in the AM. It's should be a nice warmer day on Saturday but the North side of hills will be slipery.
Please be safe and leave lots of room between vehicles.
and most important...You guys have fun out there ...
Have a great day!
Dom
-
Any chance we could catch up with you guys at the gravel pit? I can be on Channel 11, I believe that is the channel you will be on.

That should be okay, it usually takes a few minutes there to get organized and air down.
If we have lots of skip coming through on channel 11, we will switch to 10 as the alternate.

Yes, some spots are going to be very icy. Slow and cautious will be the order of the day!

Sadly, I'm not going to make it, electrical gremlins have shown up.

That sucks, hopefully you'll make it out to the next wheelin' weekend...

If you are going to post rides on this site, then let's not it be led by someone else.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here. Please try again with a sentence that clearly states what your issue is.

I thought I'd say the idea of a donation of some is' cool, If guys can drop $1000 on an ARB locker, they should be able to spring for a can of cream corn. I tried to get a x-mas run going back home in support of the spca...bring a bag of dogfoog or a chew toy, and one chick from the coast actually posted up about how the SPCA "a charity" makes to much money and how they charge to much to adopt out a pet and than she wasn't comfortable donating to them. Well don't frickin' come then... no need to post, she was 5 hours away anyway, and never intended on coming. Some people are just intent on making everyone as miserable and self absorbed as they are and the internet is the only place anyone will listen.
we will try and make it out in my "new to me" Rubicon but we are expecting company this weekend...if nothing else we will make it to the morning meet to make a donation.

You do know that this run has come and gone, right? The run happened on March 12th.
-
I'll take the cream corn then if it's still available ;D
