So I have a leaky header and a non existant muffler, I need to replace the header all the way back to the tail pipe. I have been considering the banks torque tubes and monster exhaust.
Does anyone have any experience with these, and ordering from banks? any other options? and yes I realize that I will probably have to have the exhaust custom built from the header to the cat.

Joel and I put on my Banks torque tube in the RED xj. It was a strait forward install. It's worst if you have fat hands and fingers. I have small fat hands... Thanks for Joel's. I got mine from National 4WD back in the days ... I paid $450 for mine.
I also have friends that dealt Banks directly and they have good customer service.
You can get another ones from Borla but the Banks Torque tube is better quality I believe.
Check Carlile near Chinoke to do the rest of your exhaust.... ask for Al (NUXJR told me to go see him and I was pleased) . I don't believe they are the cheapest but they do a good job.
Good luck

That explains why I heard your Jeep rumble from the Heritage Auto Value parking lot all the way down Macleod Trail (without a hood to boot) last weekend.
I just replaced a friend's exhaust in his XJ over the winter and did some research on the Banks exhaust. Looks high quality, but the stock tubular exhaust manifold already does a good job of expelling the fumes. Past magazine articles that had done the full Banks exhaust and dyno session showed only single-digit improvements at the rear wheels. I don't know if I would pony up all that money for marginal gains, but I guess it would work in your case because you have to replace your whole exhaust anyways.
Get a header with the ceramic coating to cut down all that underhood heat that plagues the XJ's while you are at it.

yup if i have to replace it i might as well go with better quality, not really looking at getting any improvements from this, just want quality stuff. dont think i can get the banks with a ceramic coat, i know there is somewhere in town that does it just dont know where.

Top Gun Coatings
They did the ceramic coating on my Chevelle's headers. I would recommend them to anyone.

Summit Racing
They've got some "builder parts" ranging from to 2" to 4" exhaust. You'll have to order those parts online or you can go to Mopac on 16th and ask the parts guys. They can get you sections of mandrel bent pipe in DIY kits.

looks like i might go with a borla system, banks does not list my xj for either the header or cat back. ::)

Anything is better than that Cherrybomb glasspack that you had on your Green XJ

Both my dad and I have gone with Dynamax Super Turbo mufflers with mandrel bent exhausts in our Jeeps and they have been pretty good. We got them done at Minute Muffler in crowfoot which was very reasonable in price. Plus when the inlet to my muffler cracked due to too much mud over the years, they replaced it on warranty and no questions asked.
-
When my stock manifold cracked I picked up a Pacesetter from Mopac....I think it was around $250 and in stock. While I was there I grabbed a 40 series Flowmaster for cheap and some fittings and called it done.

x2 on top gun coatings, when i built the probe i had everything coated there, good price fast service. i need to call and ask if they can do frames. as for the mandrel bends you can get them from grand prix automotive ditributors, they are acctually located behind 911 supply

X2 on these guys Dana. I have always brought my vehicles to them. Amazing work, they stand by their welds if it leaks, bring it back they will seal it back up right away, and the price has always been more than fair, especially if you pay cash :)
They are now called Calgary Muffler, but I think the old carline sign is still up. They are behind the old Johnny Rockets carwash next to the glass shop. 58th ave and Mac Trail pretty much, just down from Memory Express.

Just my 2 cents. I picked-up a Pacesetter header and it was a nightmare. Probably $5-600 in custom fabrication. I used the same header on a 97 Sahara TJ with the same experience (I obviously do not learn). I think you've already concluded you will go with a higher end header but consider a pass on the Pacesetter.
By the way, anyone want an intact exhaust manifold off a '99 XJ with a new gasket? It even has Moab dust on it! The price is free but you have to guarantee me that you will not re-sell it for profit.

I ran an Edelbrock header on my old RED 98 XJ. Fit was great, quality was great and it was around $400. That along with no Cat. converter and a flowmaster 40 series and it sounded awesome.
