I'm looking for some advise on tire choice. i will be purchasing tires shortly and i had my mind set on the trxus m/t read some reviews and found more then 60% said they didnt like them and about 40% of those who didnt like them said so becasue of highway speed sidewall blowouts. since this is a vehicle that will be carrying my 2 year old son and is a weekend warrior im not really exstatic on these tires any more. what kind of tires do ya'll recommend for a 95 grand with a 4 inch lift and 1 inch coil spacer? i am looking for 33" M/T's for mostly trails with the occasional mclean creek ooops it was deeper then i thought. any suggestions from your own experiance would be appreciated. and yes my 4x4 experiance is mostley as a swamper so as i proverbially drop the soap with this question please be gentle.

BFG KM2s - Good in the mud, have to rotate frequently, loud as they wear or get uneven wear, absolute crap on ice
Goodyear MTR/K - My next tire, heard nothing but good about them
Goodyear Duratracs - After seeing many blowouts and damage, I wouldn't run them offroad. I'm going to be using them as a dedicated winter tire
Toyo OCMT - Heard nothing but good things about them
What is your lift setup with? 33's on a ZJ require a bit more than other Jeeps. You will also need a fullsize spare if you plan on attending CJA runs. Even if you don't you still need one if you have the 249 transfer case.
-
are you asking what kind of lift it is? its a roughcountry i think out of my brothers zj as he bought one with adjustable control arms i believe and i understand that i will have to trim and such to fit 33's. I have the 249 but im rebuilding a 231 from a yj i believe because it has the harmonic damper on it. regardless of full time four wheel or 2 wheel option i will have a full size spare. makes me feel more comfertable and i would really enjoy coming on a cja trip to get the hang of being the captain as opposed to being the grunt and choosing lines and to meet some other members.

Toyo mud terrains,... Bought them for the TJ. I had snow tires for the jeep but sold them as the toyos rocked the winter conditions and the snows seemed redundant
-
how did you like them on the ice?
-
I have the federal couregia mt in 33s. In mud wow they rock. On rock work pretty dam good. As a daily driver, quiet. Hardly hear them. Ice and snow on pavement they work better then the hankook a/t s i have on the work van. Have not tryed them on the hills yet in deep snow and icy hills. On pavement ice they work way better then the syped procomp mt I had before.
Do a google search on pirate about mtr kevlar side wall failure on the highway at full inflation pressure.
-
highly recomend anything dick cepeck... nice compound they heat up quick if u need them to... i run the crushers(which probally arent good on ice for a average driver) but even the mud countrys on the emf minivan are awesome and have held up damn well..
-
Prepare to be overwhelmed by the various and numerous tire recommendations that will come your way.

If you're running any tire at max inflation, you pretty much deserve whatever you get.
-

No issues,.. Pulled a dead jeep car (motor and trans full of water) 40+ kms through the trails in the bush last spring on got stuck on on hill. My Neighbour recently swapped from toyo AT's to MT's on his dodge diesel and was blown away with the difference in snow/ice traction.

Toyo mt's all the way. If you want a price on them give us a call at E-mortal 403-265-6669

Thornbirds are the best tire on the market if you can find them.
Boggers are a close second.

These 3. All have 3 ply sidewalls and all wear, ride and perform very well all over.

i run the MTZs as does Heeps.
good tires. almost as good as Thornbirds.......... ;)

Fierce Attitude MT.
-
i would have said Toyo as everyone else ( i owned 37x14.50) until i put some Nitto (Toyo owns the company) Trail Grappler MT.
Better than Toyo. 8)
i met some oil rig workers that always were Toyo fans. Switched to Nitto and never will buy Toyo again.
-
now ask all these people who actually wheels their jeeps.... heck ask if they even own a JEEP
-
Well in that case. Baja Mtz. Love mine.

That is crazy!!!
The Toyos were run on my jeep that was wheeled. The Trail Grapplers are run on my truck which has pulled the travel trailer through a mud bog. More importantly is they have been down some very winter highways.
But, the OP probably cares more about how they wheel vs how safe is he going to be with his lil kid in the jeep onroad....
oh wait
But if we factor in the jeep equation, than i guess you need to factor in ONLY those jeeps that are very SIMILAR to the OP's jeeps...
So basically not many opinions are worth anything OP 8)

ha ha just read through the posts great opinions and thanks to all. looks like im going to lean towords the nittos or the toyo's. and just to derail my own thread again i have owned 3 xj's aand currently own a zj and a wj the boy will mostly be in the wj as its a stocker with no plans to be modded. it has 410,000 kms on it so once she goes it will be parts or barn burner. i saw an episode of duck dynasty's were they blew up an old chevy and a light bulb lite up above my head......whos got some land and the will to have some fun???? any ways thanks for the opinions guys.

YJ 1
ZJ 10
JK 1
dammit. Fug you win.
-
The ZJs don't count since we gutted 8 of them. And many had questionable insurance and registration status
-
Put another one down for Toyo MT's, whenever mine wear out (about 25K on them so far and still a good 85% left) I will be putting another set on. Great on the road, great in the mud, great in the snow... a little iffy on ice though, lol.
now ask all these people who actually wheels their jeeps.... heck ask if they even own a JEEP
I don't own a Jeep anymore :(

I have been running the Kumho MT KL71's on my XJ and they have worn great.. Granted its been parked 2 years, but the 3 years I did drive on them they wore very well. had lots of grip when aired down, and give that awesome hum on the highway so everyone around you knows your coming. They have never let me down yet, other than when i popped one bead but that was only because I lost a valve stem and it went instantly flat. They rock in deep snow but on ice with ZERO siping they are like wearing tennis shoes... So in terms of mileage, noise, grip on ice and weight, if any of these are a factor they are not the tire for you. Otherwise ive been pretty happy with em. As you see tires are all to do with personal experience and preference... All i can advise against is BFG AT's. Personally the WORST tire I have ever owned. Thank god I got rid of those when I did. If you want a good AT tire, the general grabber 2 gets good reviews.
Also still somewhat on topic, I got mine from 1010tires.com
Great service, and cheapest price I found in Canada for those... saved 50 bucks a tire when i got them..... shameless plug for what I found to be a good place to buy from :)
-

X2
MTZs or Maxxis
MTZs were great all round tire, really good on ice, not kidding they don t look like they should be with only a sipe per tread block
-
It's nice to see other people are just as whacked as me when it comes to Jeep ownership ;D :)
My contribution to the tire conversation is I've liked the MTZ's, BFG MT, Toyo's and disliked the BFG AT's, Trxus MT and STS
-
Trxus like to haunt you by staying on as your spare and mock you for making such a poor choice in tires in the first place...
Pitbulls all the way!
-
Which is too bad for the trxus MT, cause it does have a great tread.
-
:)
-
Also, don't listen to everyone calling MTs mud terrains, typically it means maximum traction. For example Goodyear MT/R means Maximum Traction/Reinforced. They suck in the mud compared to a true mud tire and haul in the rocks. Toyo MT also means Maximum Traction, they however do not suck in the mud.

Hmmm well I'm sure we will go wheelin sometime and you can tell me how much my MTR-K's suck in mud. Granted I'd give the toyo a slight advantage MTR-K's still pull hard.
What would be a real mud tire then? I say anything with large lugs and voids is a mud tire despite the technicalities
-
For sure man, love to go wheelin with ya, and its pretty well the general consensus that they ain't good in mud. Much like I'm glad my duratracs work out for me, I'm glad your mtrs work out for you :)
Also, if you read the WHOLE sentence, you'll notice that I said they suck in the mud COMPARED to a true mud tire, if it makes you feel you better... I'll add that the MT/R is a lot better then mine in the mud, hands down.

Boggers followed by TSl's are about the only tires that are designed for pure mud. But it shows because they lack in the rocks and the loose stuff compared the inbetweens like mtr's, toyo's, mtz's, etc etc.
-
Unfortunately I cant chime in on the multi jeep ownership since I've only had a handfull.
Let me know when we get to the outragious dollars spent on a rig and Im in ;)

Nitto Trail Grapplers. Not the worst that I have run in the winter (that honor goes to Hankook Dynapro MT), not too loud, respectable in the mud, decent on rocks, and they seem durable as well. It really comes down to what you are willing to comprimise. As far as keeping your family safe in the winter, with a short wheelbased vehicle and rear-wheel drive, don't be shy about running it in 4x4 in questionable weather, and pick a middle-of the-road tire. The guy with the Sumper Swampers waiting on the other side of the mudhole will be happy to give you a little tug the rest of the way through!
