Winch for my '09 Sarhara
« on: September 01, 2009, 07:40:28 PM »
OK so I think it's time for a new addtion to my 09 Wrangler 4D Sahara ULtd.  I know I prolly need at least a 9000lb one.  Where do you suggest I get it?  I have the stock bumper on still so I hope I can bolt it straight on there.  Will be some plastic to cut our obviously.
Suggestions?
Tim

#1. You'll need a mounting plate. I have a JK, and putting winch on the front is not quite as easy as putting one on a TJ. You might also look at buying a bumper that is winch compatible instead of buying a winch plate, and then spending more money later to upgrade your bumper.

#2. I'd suggest a Warn winch. Not to slam others, but Warn is generally acknowledged as building a better product. I've seen some INSANE things done to Warn winches on the front of one ton trucks, and they just kept going...and going...and going...

#3. Brink is advertising a Warn 8274 in the "for sale" forum here. He says it hasn't seen much use, and while it's not as sleek as some other types, the 8274 is a bulletproof design.  His asking price is well below half of what you would pay for a new 8274...and probably less than you would spend on a new winch that's not anywhere near as good.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Cool thanks I'll look for it.  And yeah, they want $350+ for the mounting bracket alone!

Here's the thing...you'll get better value for your money if you just get a bumper that is set up for the winch you want to use. Lemon-Aid Jay built me a front bumper for my JK that I am VERY happy with, and I got exactly what I wanted - including some things that I don't think are available on any off-the-shelf bumper.

If you look carefully, you might be able to find an 8274 mounting bracket for less than $350...but I'm not sure about that. The 8274 is unusual in that it is a "front" mount instead of a "bottom" mount winch.

Oh...one other thing...whatever you do, don't cheap out on mounting hardware. Take a run to Gregg's and pick up some Grade 8 bolts. I've seen what happens when people don't use good hardware on things that are part of their recovery gear  :o

just get the cutting disc cut the top of your bumper out slap the plate down and bolt the poop out of it and then the winch to that and youll be set no reason to spend 700 bucks on bumpers .

i know i have a TJ and warm makes a nice stubby bumper for TJ for like 550 and my stubby cost me 4 $ and about 5 minutes of work .. cutting disc for a 7" grinder works well

I have a j/k bumper with mounting plate that is already cut for a winch.  The bumper has the factory fogs still in it.  100.00 bucks and you can have it.  This way you dont have to cut your new one.  pm me if you are interested.  My bumper is black off a 2007 rubi
