what to do
« on: March 15, 2010, 08:35:36 PM »
alright boys and girls

need some advice ..

i need to do gears and bearings in both front and rear diffs
as well as front and rear axles

now my question is i dont have the 1800$ to do it all in one shot

i figure i should do front and rear gears and bearings and front shafts   leave the rear ones for a month or so

or do i suck it up and do them all at once and be tight as BEEP for a month or so

I'd either wait till after the next big snow dump or do it all at once.  I'm betting we get one last city stopper before we see spring.
This is not 'Nam, this is wheeling.  There are rules.

a month isnt very long. wait the 1 month, then order it all at once. save on shipping or whatever and then you can organize the install time better. instead of taking it all apart twice.

Sorry to hijack the post but I have a question about gears. I had my gears done about 8 months ago and now I want to install a detriot locker in the rear. Do you think I would have to redo the Backlash or screw around with the Pinion setting at all. I know I should have waited and done them both at the same time but I didn't.

No Mike, you only have to do the backlash, and carrier bearing preload. Pinion will remain the same.

Not a tough job. Specially if its a 8.25 with the spanners.

There is a good chance your locker is gone already. Unforunate as that sounds, of all the rubicon diffs I've done, which is probably 50 plus, the only two I've ever seen with internal failures have been blown lockers.

You might want to look at that before making a decision. If your locker is blown you will be getting into 2000$ just repair and replace whats in there. Specially if the locker guts have chewed the gears up.

Do it all at once one way or the other  I am not a big fan of being broke so I'd wait a month.  Don't know about the locker but if there is bits of metal floating around in your diff fluid I can't imagine its doing the locker any good
