TJ Replacement headlights
« on: December 20, 2010, 08:29:07 AM »
Hello Gang,   Wondering if anyone has had any experience with upgraded headlights, like an hid system or just a H4 bulb and housing...?   I need to replace my headlights and thought it would be better to upgrade to something brighter and whiter....   any thoughts...  Thanks.. 8)

I used the Rampage houseing and bulb.  What a huge difference and it was only $100.

I think I did order them through these guys but I'm sure you can get them a canadian source as well.

i used the IPF conversion lights on ym YJ, amazing how well they worked. the stock yj lights were dangerously weak. the H4 upgrade was awesome.

You should be able to find a wide variety of 7" round H4 headlights, and H4 bulbs are available in huge assortment of types and wattage. I've had great luck with the Hella lights that I put into my JK, but Cibie also makes great stuff. I haven't used IPF lights, but I've heard good things.

You might also want to look at upgrading your wiring harness. The stock wiring to your headlights is probably pretty small for the wattage...you will get more light if you run heavier gauge wires powered by a relay - you can just use your stock harness to trigger the relays. A company called Susquehanna Motorsports makes a "plug and play" harness for the JK - I am sure that someone else makes something similar for the TJ.

I also went with the H4's and fatboy bulbs and would definitely reccomend them. I have the housing in my CJ and the stock housing in my TJ. I did a test in my garage with the two vehicles, and they housing makes the lights twice as bright. It really depends on how bright you want them.

These look pretty slick...Just don't know about dropping that kind of cash on headlights...

Anyone seen or heard anything about them?

They are very cool...but don't expect first-rate performance out of them. Everything I have heard indicates that they're a top quality product...but they're built to be super durable and offer long life - not necessarily provide a ton of light.

Sylvania silverstars are pretty bright for about $30 a bulb.  Direct replacement.  I found mine at canadian tire.  ~4000k color temp which I believe is similar to an H3 bulb.
This is not 'Nam, this is wheeling.  There are rules.

I bought the same kit as the author, it is cheap, and it is chinese-made, and I wasnt expecting much, but I have had good luck with the kit so far as seen in that link above.  I know the OP of that thread has now changed his tune on VVME, but it is cheap and I wanted to see how well it would work.  I have been running mine for a year.  The pictures the OP took speak for themselves.

I bought the 4000k kit, I wasnt looking for that "hid-look", just better light.  I also disconnected the DRL, as I read that DRL's and these kits often lead to premature bulb failures.

I put GE Nighthawks in my gf's TJ. Lots brighter than stock. The aircraft landing lights on the bumper also help as well :)
