front wheel bearings

last night i started to get a nice grinding noise in my jeep .jacked it up and saw i have about a good 1/4 inch play on front router .this will be first  time change  them on this jeep .are they pressed in ?or can i do it if can find a realy big wrench? shops i called looking for around 500.

if your jeep is lifted with bigger and or offset wheels the front bearings seem to go faster. i buy mine online for waaay less money then locally. i would try that if your not in a hurry and can wait a week for shipping. dingman definetly good idea on the liquid wrench cause they can be a huge pita

i just tryed taking off some bolts and bent my cheap breaker bar .can jeep be driven across town even with it making noise or better to get towed?

i got the cheap ones from napa . they where 75.00 my  cost

I snapped a 1/2" Snap on breaker bar first time I tried to get that hub nut loose. Went and bought a Craftsman 3/4" breaker bar with a 3/4 to 1/2 reducer and in 10 years I havn't  been able to break that sucker!

Now that I have a garage, compressor and high quality impact its a breeze.

Where do you order them from online?

I have gotten a lot of different bearings from Transmission supply in Calgary. Good quality and they can usually cross reference the original to a better one. Not real sure if they have what you want but it's worth a shot. All the best.

I bought my Timken wheel bearings from RockAuto for ~$85 each. Local parts place wanted $285  each for a comparable SKF bearing, so RockAuto it was. I always order a few space parts (U-joints, gaskets, A/C seals, etc) to make shipping worth it.

I used a 36mm socket and 36" 3/4 drive breaker bar from pa for about $40-$50.  Took that and a torch plus a can of pb blaster to get that nut out.  To remove the unit bearing after the nut and three 13mm twelve point bolts were off, I did the bolt trick to get the unit bearing out with ease.  You spin the axle till the outer shafts ears are parallel to the ground, place a bolt or socket that's long enough between the outer ear and inner "c" and have a buddy turn the steering wheel left until the unit bearing pops out.  (if it's the passenger side bearing that's gone).

This was on a xj Dana 30, not sure if it will work the same on a vacuum disco.  You might want to change the u joint while you have everything open too, seeing as it's only another $35.

FYI, partsource wants $165 for a Dana 30 unit bearing.
