« on: April 17, 2012, 01:05:42 PM »
Just wondering how dificult it would be too pull apart my 231 and replace the chain? I am thinking of trying it myself.

if you can remove the transfer case from your jeep you should be able to pull apart the 231 and replace a chain.

i'd make sure you know its stretched/fubared before yanking it though....

you can do it without removing the t-case, just get some good jack stands, such as the 12Ton Princess Auto ones.

Sweet! That helps a lot since I know transfer cases are really heavy haha and I don't feel like pulling it out now.

A 231 is not that heavy. I have no problem lifting them in and out by myself.

Just pulled a 247 out today.

Ah I guess haha, it would be good experience to pull it, and my t case sometimes gets stuck in 4w that would be the chain, correct?

Mmmm not really. Lots of other, simpler answers that should be checked first.

What brought you to that conclusion?

I am not very pro at knowing things. I learn as I go so I guess I should do some more digging in the interwebs haha

Ibelieve the way to check the chain without tearing anything apart is to put it in 4wheel and check for excessive rotational play between the front and rear outputs.
Maybe someone else can chime in but I recall reading that on JF.

I was having similar issues and it turned out to be that my linkage was just out of adjustment.
