Swapping out a 2.5 for a 4.0.
« on: June 01, 2014, 10:18:23 PM »
Hey guys just curious how hard it is to swap out a 2.5 and install a 4.0 ltr.  The jeep is a 98 with a dead 2.5.    Can't find one so thinking about a swap.  4.0 Cherokees are everywhere   Not sure if will bolt  in nice or if need tranny ,transfer case etc.   Any help be great

You'll need engine, transmission, transfer case, motor mounts on frame, trans mount, exhaust work, driveshafts, rad fan shroud, wiring harness, and a few other things I've forgotten.
Find a similar year for best results. Find it all from a tj is ideal but Xj could work for the most part. Transfer case on Xj is clocked lower for clearance.

So a little less work than an LS swap but a lot less reward?

do an LS swap then you might as well just swap to bigger diffs, lockers and link suspension.  pretty sure the D35 wouldn't be happy with 400 hp. lol

It won't bolt in. You also need the ECM from the 4.0L. Your best bet it to get a rollover and buy the whole thing. Small block chevs are around the same price/effort to swap in with a lot more power but it will be much easier to break things.
