Gears for 1989 YJ
« on: September 25, 2007, 11:34:52 AM »
I've got an 89 YJ 4.2l.  I really have no idea what the gearing is other than it is desperately high sped.  I am looking at doing the gears and adding lockers.  My question: is there an easy way to find out what mine has for gears, axles (C clip or Non C clip).  I would like to go to 4.56's and have a line on some good deals out of the states.  I website I was on stated that if the existing gears were smaller than 3.54's and I wanted to go to something bigger than 3.73's than I would have to change the casing.  Do they mean carrier?

All help and advice is appreciated.

Gear ratio should be stamped on a metal tag held on by the diff cover bolts. If it's too rusted or lost, you can jack up the rear, spin the tires once and count the number of revolutions the drive shaft does.

Your 6 cylinder YJ is likely 3.07 gears.

If you are going to use a full locker like Detroit or ARB, it replaces the carrier. The "lunch box" lockers need an "open"(non-posi) carrier to be installed into.

Look in the for sale section at 4wheelr.ca

There is a complete 8.8 with a detroit, and gear options of 4.10, or 4.56.

All for less then you will spend on new parts for that 35 you have.

Plus an 8.8 is at least twice as strong.
