Well I decided to try out an idea I got after seeing a cool tool over at princess auto. I'm sure it's not a new idea as I've found a few devices for sale that are based on the same principle, but are more expensive. I got tired of spending a few hours just to change the diff fluids in my jeep, and after seeing a neat little Drill Pump over at princess auto, I figured why not try just sucking it out through the fill hole. Now I know that it's always good to take the cover off to inspect the gears, but if everything is running ok, and you just want to change your gear oil cause you might have gotten a bit of water in it. Then why not save yourself some time.
Parts wise it's pretty cheap.
Powerfist Drill pump - $9 - Princess auto
2 Hose-to-3/8 barbed adapters $5 each at home depot (required as the bits of hose supplied are not air tight at all)
Few feet of 5/16 ID clear hose - stretches onto the 3/8" barbed adapter to make a nice tight fit.
Before connecting it all up, make sure to open up the face of the pump and put a bit of oil in it to lube it up real nice. Otherwise you may burn up the drill pump before the fluid reaches it, another $9 later I learned my lesson. Once it's all connected, stick the "in" side hose into your diff, "out" side gets pointed into what ever container you want to catch your oil in, then start up the drill. Takes a few seconds for the pump to prime, but once the fluid hits the pump the flow rate is quite impressive, and don't need to run the drill hard at all... a nice low rpm is all that's needed. Will Drain the Diff in under a minute. The nice thing about this setup is you can use the same pump to refill your diffs, t-case, transmission... etc. Managed to do both diffs, t-case, and transmission fluid in about an hour and half... including the time to clean up the garage enough to get the jeep in, and assemble the pump LOL.
